The effort of the climb, whether on foot or by bike, is rewarded by the magnificent view. The ruins of the summit castle lie on the summit of the 524 m high Stoppelsberg in the Kuppenrhön, the remnant of a volcanic vent formed in the Miocene. The keep of Hauneck Castle is founded on hexagonal basalt columns that formed when the lava cooled; they are exposed at the base of the keep. History of Hauneck Castle: Built by the Knights of Haun, around the 14th century/Ancestral seat in Burghaun 1402 First documented mention/Conquest and partial destruction by the Hessian Landgrave Hermann 1409 The Landgrave finally acquires the castle through a purchase agreement with Johann and Heinrich Haun. 1469 Second destruction by the Lords of Buchenau 1483 Reconstruction as the seat of a Hessian bailiff by the Landgrave of Hesse-Marburg 1660 Abandonment of the official residence and relocation to Holzheim Progressive deterioration followed. The castle ruins had to be closed on August 1, 1981, due to the danger of collapse. On May 20, 1982, after extensive renovations, the now secured castle ruins with a walkable keep were reopened. Konrad Zuse is associated with Hünfeld and Bad Hersfeld. But even here, he left his mark through the early production facility. An information plaque commemorates this.

The somewhat strenuous climb to this very beautiful, well-preserved and well-maintained facility is compensated with a great view of the surrounding area and in particular of the Hessian bowling alley - a long-extinct volcanic area. The construction of this facility is interesting in that it is located directly on a long-extinct volcano. This is clearly visible at the foundation of the keep, which uses the lava dome - you can see the basalt columns slanting at the base. This can also be found in a similar way at WEIDELSBURG. A visit to the Stoppelsburg or the Long Stones is definitely recommended

From the small rest area above the Langen Steine, equipped with a table and benches, there is a beautiful view of the "spikes" of the Hessian skittles, which stand out here on the horizon. There are also some parking spaces here (but only accessible via more or less gravel roads).

In 1949, Konrad Zuse founded Zuse KG together with his former fellow students Harro Stucken and Alfred Eckard on the site of the former postal relay station. This was the first place where computers were built for commercial purposes in Europe. The company was very successful, so that by 1957 it had grown to a workforce of around 180 people. For reasons of space, it was decided to move to Bad Hersfeld in 1957. With the Z11, the first computer was mass-produced in these buildings in Germany from 1955. A total of 48 computers of this type were manufactured. The purchase price was around 120,000 DM. For comparison: the monthly income of a worker was about 180 DM in the mid-1950s.
