Fairburn Ings nature reserve is managed by the RSPB. It used to be a coal mine but has been transformed over the last 60 years to a haven for wildlife. It's an important breeding and nesting site for water birds. The star species that you may see are Bittern, Willow Tit, Kingfisher, Tree Sparrow and Spoonbill. The visitor centre has information, toilets and a cafe. It's open 10:00 - 17:00 in the summer and 10:00 - 16:00 in the winter.

This is a lovely little village to look around and then get back on the Riverbank track to Castleford

Beautiful Nature Reserve

Unique path along a causeway, between a lake and the River Aire. The Riverbank Trail is located in the Fairburn Ings Nature Reserve.

The nature reserve is located on a 400ha former coal mining area. "Ings" means this is a stretch that is regularly flooded by the adjacent River Aire. It consists of numerous lakes and wetlands. It is also one of 10 bird sanctuaries in England. In the park several observation stations are created, which are equipped with some very decorative signs.
