On the patronage of this church: Saint ANDREW is one of the twelve apostles whom Jesus Christ called to follow him. However, in the biblical accounts he is usually somewhat overshadowed by his much more famous brother: Saint Peter. In the Gospels we find the calling of the two siblings presented in different ways. According to the text version of the Gospel of John (John 1:40-42), Andrew is called first (together with another disciple whose name is not mentioned). Later he tells his brother that he has found the Messiah. The feast of Saint Andrew in the calendar of saints is on November 30th in all major Christian denominations. The X-shaped white "St. Andrew's Cross" on which he was executed forms the national flag of Scotland against a blue background and has also found its way into the national flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

Quite reminiscent of St Andrew's Church at Covehithe (komoot.com/highlight/4811604). Also still in use despite being partially ruinous.

Approached via a short gravel stretch from either direction but quite rideable. Tremendous views of the River Blyth estuary and the harbour.

Diversion but saves the cost of the ferry

This was once the old Southwold Victorian Cottage Hospital which has been recently repurposed. It is now the home to Southwold Library, the Geography Fieldwork Academy and two community businesses – Old Hospital Nursery and The Canteen, a farm to fork café. The Old Hospital has been redesigned into a beautiful and environmentally sustainable space to meet the needs of the local community. The Canteen is a nice open bright space with seating in and outside. There is a breakfast and lunch menu with plenty to choose from including excellent coffee and a plethora of sweet treats to choose from for those with a sweet tooth. opening times are 9am till 4pm Tuesday through till Saturday. An excellent stop away from the main high street with those all important bike racks. Good tea shop with large garden and space for our bikes but limited food menu which finished at 1300 when we were there. Public toilets across road.

Just off through routes good place for quick stop. Seems to have a music college or similar unless they were just staying there when we visited.

St Andrew's is the fourth church to have been built in Walberswick. It is tucked into the south-west corner of the ruins of the third church. Personally I think the church and ruins are best viewed first thing in the morning as the sun rises from the east

Southwold Harbour sits on the River Blythe with a path running along both sides of the water which forms part of the Suffolk Coast Path. There is a ferry connecting Southwold and Walberswick in the summer months and the Harbour Inn is a great place to stop for a bite to eat or a drink if you are finishing your run nearby.

Thorpness is set around The Meare, an artificial lake lined with colourful wooden boats.

An often overlooked area, Southwold Harbour lies south of the town on the River Blyth. It is populated with quirky fisherman’s huts and offers simple outdoor dining.

Great stop for coffee and snacks before hitting the trail across to Dunwich which is almost opposite the the Deli

Thorpeness Meare is a boating lake like no other. The lake with its islands and surrounds covers around sixty acres in total, with over forty acres of water. Reassuringly, nowhere in the lake is more than 3ft deep, so it provides a very safe boating environment. The islands were named by J.M Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan.

The Middleton Cowboy is the work of local metal worker Paul Richardson of "Steel Sculptures".

Southwold is a vibrant and picturesque town on the Suffolk coast. Its gorgeous sandy beach, interesting pier and colourful promenade are worth an amble, while the town centre has all the amenities you could need. The town was the home of 1984 novelist George Orwell between 1921 and the Second World War.

This is a lovely spot on the River Blythe just to the south of the town of Southwold. There's plenty to do: it's possible to catch a ferry across to neighbouring Walberswick, while the harbour is also popular for crabbing. The Harbour Inn serves fresh seafood, while there's also a French restaurant and a chippy.
