Anyone traveling along the cycle path along the emerging Cottbus Baltic Sea should briefly dismount here: The West Viewpoint offers a view of what was – and what is to come. Originally used as an open-cast mining lookout point, the small wooden hut with its metal staircase still stands in place. These days, you no longer see excavators, but a growing lake. The viewpoint itself is simple, but offers a covered platform with an information sign and a good overview of the western shoreline. The surroundings are currently barren and more functional than idyllic – a lot will certainly happen here in the coming years. Access is possible directly from the cycle path, although there is no bike rack. Anyone interested in landscape change, structural policy, or simply marveling at grand dimensions will find their money's worth here. There are no seating options, but the detour is worth it for a quick breather or a photo.

Before the weir, the Hammergraben branches off and flows east for about one kilometer. Along the way, it is crossed by the B169 federal highway toward Guben and the Cottbus–Guben railway line. After a 90° turn to the north, it passes through the Hammergrabensiedlung, a residential area of Cottbus, and then Merzdorf. About 700 meters after passing under a road bridge west of Merzdorf, the Hammergraben originally split, having recently received water from the Tranitz River. The old course turned east again not far from here, eventually supplying the Lakoma pond landscape with water. After a weir, it now comes to an abrupt end due to devastation caused by the Cottbus-Nord open-cast mine. The open-cast mine, which has been depleted since 2015, was flooded with Spree water to form the Cottbus Baltic Sea from 2019 to 2024, with the Hammergraben serving as a feeder. The new Hammergraben makes a slight left turn at the same point, finally flowing parallel to the B 169 on the west side past the former village of Lakoma. Here, the Hammergraben takes on more of a canal appearance and then, after a good four kilometers, rejoins the original Hammergraben course near Maust. Flowing through the Peitz pond landscape and supplied with water, the ditch reaches the southern edge of Peitz and turns west there. At this bend, there is an island surrounded by the water, and a branch canal begins, heading east to the Jänschwalde power station. Continuing along the main ditch, it passes the Laßzinswiesen meadows and the village of Maiberg, before joining the Malxe River just five kilometers west of the village. The Hammergraben (Lower Sorbian: Goramśica)[1] is a moat built in the 16th century as a feeder for the then 5,000-acre Peitz Ponds. Its course begins at the large Spree weir in Cottbus, where a portion of the Spree is diverted to the right bank.
