The expansion of the railway line between Lübbenau and Cottbus to two tracks is included in the Coal Region Investment Act and is funded by the federal government. The law promotes various measures to strengthen Germany's former coal-mining regions. Lusatia is particularly affected by the impending structural change – here, railway expansion can help generate new economic momentum. Construction of the second track between Lübbenau and Cottbus is scheduled to begin in 2026. Commissioning is planned for the timetable change at the end of 2027. From then on, trains will run from Cottbus to Berlin every 30 minutes. A second track will be laid and a new barrier-free platform will be built at Kolkwitz station as part of the work. Along the route, a total of six railway bridges and 18 culverts (e.g., for streams) will be renovated and widened to accommodate a second track. One example of such a culvert is the Stöbitzer Landgraben. It runs beneath the railway line and then flows into the Unterteich pond. In addition, three moorland areas along the route will be remediated. The subsoil of the tracks will be stabilized. The idyllic view of the Unterteich pond invites visitors to linger and take a short break. More information about the project can be found at: https://www.i2030.de/suedost/.

The lower pond is a popular bathing and fishing spot. It is about 1.4 km long and 1.6 km wide.

There felt like 1000 ducks on the big pond. When they rise from the water, one easily thinks of “The Birds” by Hitchcock.

Mostly easy to follow bike path. The section by the lake is idyllic.

Beautiful lake near Vetschau.

At the lower pond there is a nice resting place with a park bench, from here there is a nice view
