Lemons Hill Bridge carries the road across the northern end of Alton water reservoir. It links the two parts of Tattingstone village.

Probably the most scenic part of Ipswich (admittedly not a very high bar).

About 20m of the pier is now restored and open but that still leaves a lot left to do!

Lemons Hill Bridge crosses Alton Water and links the two parts of Tattingstone which were split when the reservoir was created. A great number of buildings were lost. In the north is the village pub, the White Horse, a lovely place to stop, while in the south is an 18th century workhouse and the parish church. If you are running through the village keep an eye out for the red phone box which is home to a collection of audio recordings of people who were impacted by the flooding of the area to make way for Alton Water.

A visit to Ipswich Waterfront is worth including in any tour of the town. Here you can admire countless yachts, and also also eat / drink well. There are a range of restaurants, cafes and bars here.

Shotley Pier was built in 1894 to enable the Royal Mail to travel between Shotley Gate and Harwich. As well as mail, coal, munitions and sailors also travelled on its rails – the pier is the only railway pier in Suffolk. At the beginning of the 21st century, it fell into a state of disrepair. A fundraising campaign in 2018 enabled supporters to purchase the pier and begin renovations. The works are still ongoing today.

The largest manmade reservoir in Suffolk, Alton Water is a tranquil place to whittle away some time on a bike Tour. It took over 13 years to construct the reservoir, opening in 1987. The waters' surface area measures a whopping 400 acres (160 ha) – plenty big enough to enjoy various watersports!

Scenic and peaceful place to stop. Even beautifully atmospheric when passing through in the pouring rain, makes a very wet tour more enjoyable.

I live on Ipswich Waterfront and most of my exercise, due to lockdown, is here. Worth knowing that it is now closed to vehicles to make it easier to use for exercise, although walkers and runners need to keep an eye out for cyclists as who uses path or road is very mixed! It gets very busy on warm or sunny days, so if you want to exercise you are best off getting out early if you want to be able to socially distance and keep moving. There are still occasional vehicles and when the hotel and bars/restaurants open again there are likely to be more, despite being prohibited at the moment. There is an active consultation on making the road closure to vehicles permanent.

Manningtree has traditionally claimed to be the smallest town in England, but its 2007 population of 700 people in 20 hectares[2] and the 2011 census population for the civil parish of 900 are much higher than the 351 population of Fordwich, Kent.[3] However the settlement of Manningtree has a population of 5696.[4] In April 2009 it was proposed that Manningtree should merge with Mistley and Lawford to form a single parish, losing its separate identity as a town.[5] As of 2018 such a merger has not occurred, and the town council currently claims to be the smallest by area. The lighthouses, commissioned by Trinity House in 1862 and completed in 1863, served to guide ships towards Harwich harbour (some 1.5km to the north) their different heights enabling the two lights to be aligned on approach. They replaced two late 18th century lighthouses at Harwich (the `Low' and `High' lighthouses) which had become unreliable due to shifting sand bars around the mouth of the Stour estuary. A comprehensive pattern of marker buoys in the harbour approach rendered the new lights obsolete in 1917. The lights escaped demolition, but gradually deteriorated through lack of routine maintenance. A major programme of restoration took place between 1983 and 1988. A short downhill section before a left turn into the Marina towards the Ferry. A great relief after the undulating plateau on the Peninsula.

It is a top spot to grab a bite to eat or a coffee. The Grazing Sheep is a pleasant Italian cafe overlooking the harbour. Towards Ipswich centre there is a great community cafe called La Tour, serving coffee, pastries and also hosts a small art gallery.

These unusual lighthouses were built around the 17th century and are a unique example of the first types of lighthouses dating to Roman and medieval times. Manningtree is England's smallest town, according to its residents. Don’t let that fool you into thinking there’s nothing here, though. Situated on a wildlife-rich estuary, and hailed as the gateway to Constable country, the town is full of beauty.
