The place name commemorates the canonized Empress Kunigunde of Luxembourg. According to legend, Empress Kunigunde was once traveling outside the city with her husband, the also canonized Emperor Henry II. They could still hear the bells of Bamberg Cathedral from a distance. The Kunigunde's bell sounded so beautiful that Emperor Heinrich, out of envy, pulled his ring from his finger, hurled it five kilometers at his wife's bell, and in the process a round piece of the bell broke off. Since then she has sounded a bit melancholic.
