Great view of the Isar River

The Monopteros in the English Garden is a neoclassical circular temple on an artificial hill, built in the 1830s according to plans by Leo von Klenze. It offers a sweeping view over the southern part of the park to Munich's Old Town and is a popular vantage point. The Monopteros harmoniously combines architecture and landscape and is considered an expression of the 19th-century idealized conception of nature. Today, it is a striking landmark of the English Garden and a popular destination for walkers and photographers.

Following a tragic accident, it is currently closed (June 2025). The Eisbachwelle is a standing wave in the Eisbach River at the southern edge of the English Garden and is known worldwide as an urban surfing spot. People have been surfing there since the 1970s – right in the city center and throughout the year. The approximately one-meter-high wave was created by technical installations in the stream and has been modified over time to ensure it is permanently surfable. Today, the Eisbachwelle is a popular meeting place for surfers and spectators and symbolizes Munich's sporting diversity.

The Oberföhring Dam is a weir on the Isar River in northern Munich and also serves as the inlet structure of the Middle Isar Canal. The weir itself is not a hydroelectric power plant. However, there is a small, largely underground power plant directly below the weir, through which water from the canal is diverted back into the Isar.

Continuation of the MU Tour #5 Munich Northeast: After about a five-minute bike ride, we reach the Oberföhring Weir, a weir structure that stretches across the northern Isar River. The weir was built between 1921 and 1924 and connects the northern part of the English Garden with the Oberföhring district, located east of the Isar. Here, the Isar River is dammed by about six meters, and some of its water north of the weir is diverted into the Middle Isar Canal, which flows back into the Isar after about 64 kilometers. Seven run-of-river power plants are fed and driven along this canal. Because the water is divided at the weir, the western riverbed carries less water and is a wonderful recreational area for swimming and barbecues in summer. Pedestrians can cross the Isar River on the north side of the weir via a wide footbridge. Cyclists dismount and push their bikes. Nearby is the "INSEL," an inclusive sports field run by the Munich Pfennigparade.

A beautiful swimming lake with something for everyone. Among other amenities, there's a restaurant, a calisthenics park, a playground, volleyball, a nudist area, and numerous benches. When it's busy, the paths are too narrow for easy cycling. As far as I know, the paths are only officially open to cycling outside of the swimming season.
