There are traces of settlements in Spardorf that indicate a pre-Christian settlement.[5] The modifier of the place name is most likely derived from the Middle High German word spar(we) (sparrow, sparrow).[6][7][8] The oldest documented mention of the name Spardorf dates back to 1305. In the action book of the Nuremberg patrician Holzschuher there is the entry "Sibito de Spardorf 1305".
