Ehingen lies in a meander of the Schmiech River. This small river rises about 20 kilometers north of the town in the Lutheran Mountains, enters the city near Berkach, crosses the city center—providing many picturesque views—and flows southeast into the Danube. The Danube only touches Ehingen in the extreme southeast.

A playground and a beer garden, winding paths along the Schmiech River, and a romantic rose garden invite you to linger in Ehingen's city garden. The artificially created Groggensee, whose name derives from the area's former name "Krockental," is the annual setting for a carnival spectacle, the "Excavation of the Groggadäler." In cold winters, the Groggensee is often used as an ice skating rink.
