The Hilchenhaus in Lorch am Rhein is an architectural gem and considered the most important Renaissance building in the Middle Rhine Valley. It was built between 1546 and 1548 by Imperial Field Marshal Johann Hilchen von Lorch—although he did not live to see its completion.

This section of the trail is lined with many oak trees. Oak fruit is a favorite food of wild boars. Their tracks can be seen everywhere along this part of the route. Even the paths are not immune to burrowing marks. Therefore, especially in spring (from April onwards), you should be cautious if you happen to encounter these rather shy animals and their young piglets during the day. It doesn't happen often because they tend to laze around in their hiding places during the day, but encounters are not without their dangers.

This is a really great hut up here in the vineyards. It's definitely worth stopping off here and taking a moment to sit down. The view over the vineyards down into the valley to the Rhine and the beautiful landscape on the other side of the river is magical.
