Radio interferometry started in the mid-1940s on the outskirts of Cambridge, but with funding from the Science Research Council and a corporate donation of £100,000 from Mullard Limited, a leading commercial manufacturer of thermionic valves. War Memorial on former airfield worth a few minutes stop.

New tarmac on a wide road with hardly any traffic makes a great stretch for an interval segment.

Great views southwards towards Eyeworth & Dunton.

A short climb from the A505 junction brings you over the rounded ridge to views across the upper valley of the River Cam, with the steeple of Ashwell church peeping above the hedgerows as you descend into the village.

Pleasant if unexceptional little village. There's a pub but no cafe or shop.

You can find similar markers on lots of roads in the area that cross the meridian line.

10% average maybe. My Garmin registers 15% on the steepest bit. Thankfully short.

Unfortunately it’s only a fairly short stretch - a couple of km - that has the smooth new tarmac but the rest of the surface between Eyeworth and Ashwell isn’t too bad compared to many.

Not as steep as Croydon Hill...but nearer to Cambridge! It does touch just over 10% from both sides but for longer from the Haslingfield side.

Great place to dip your feet after the ride!

More fun from the Haslingfield side as you don't need to brake on the descent. Also, The Royal Oak in Barrington is decent. Is this steeper than Croydon hill though?
