The tool station is a useful addition

The foundation for the original building was laid in 1280, where it was a Gatehouse for the northern approach to Ashridge and was used by Henry VIII as part of the hunting grounds. But following heavy damage by Cromwells armies, the lodge was rebuilt by the eminent architect Sir Jeffrey Wyattville in 1823. Little Gaddesden Lodge now functions extremely well as a private home.

The Alford cross is really an Ashridge artefact despite the fact that it stands outside the Park boundary in Little Gaddesden parish. Erected in 1891 to commemorate the life of of an aristocratic landlady (Lady Marian Alford) who influenced the life of many workers on the Estate for some twenty years. One of Central Bedfordshire Cycle Repairs stations has been installed. The station includes a stand to mount a bike on, an integrated multi-valve pump and a series of tools, such as screwdrivers, spanners, hex keys, and tyre levers.

A plaque and obelisk to mark those that served and returned from the First World War. At the time of the First World War, the total population of the parish was 71. Of these 15 enlisted to serve and all of them returned. There were few places in England where all the men returned safely. These places became known as “Thankful Villages”.

Meeting point for Leighton Buzzard Road Cycling Club (http://lbrcc.com/) and a monument to Leighton Buzzard's history. This work of art, by David Mayne, was officially unveiled September 2005 and has the title of 'Fly Past'. The monument is approximately 8 feet high and 8 feet wide and the design depicts the heritage of the town to the present day. The centre of the design represents the propeller of a Vimy bomber biplane which were constructed until 1919 at the Morgan & Co. factory at Vimy Road (i.e. the land where the current Tescos supermarket is sited). Surrounding the propeller are a number of disks, each of which carry designs (on both sides), representative of the towns heritage (see photos below). The designs on these disks were the result of workshops with the pupils of Leighton Middle School, the Leighton Buzzard Arts Society and the residents of Tudor Court. A circular ring of carved paving runs around the base of the monument containing the name of the town at various different points in history.

A nice fast descent on good road in normal conditions but watch for gravel washed onto the road in heavy rain

Beautiful views of the reservoir - usually as still as a duck pond. And if you're lucky you'll see some actual ducks too!

A nice stretch of road on the edge of The Chilterns. Quiet and usually car free, but don't forget the small climb at the end.

A fun descent, if ascending you get some great views of Ivinghoe Beacon and surrounding hills

Mini Castle, how could you not like it.

A couple of pretty, country lanes that bypasses the busy, main road. It's a bit potholey and gravelly where the cars park by the marina.

This was recently resurfaced, and is thus a pleasure to ride.

Flat, smooth and a chance to tuck into the drops and put the hammer down, as they say. Watch out for the boy racers.

A great ascent, push once you go over the canal, it's a steady climb that gets more intense over the last 100m. Going down, it's gritty and winds gently but can mask oncoming vehicles. It's narrow so descend with caution. There's a bench with a litter bin at the bottom of the hill so a great time to refuel and take in the tranquility.

Don't hesitate to call in. Fantastic pub with brilliant, friendly service. There's a courtyard with canopy, lights and heaters for s continental vibe all year round. Excellent takeaway food during the lockdown too. Deserves more than a passing pint! Guest beers plus the usual from Tring Brewery all year round.

Really smooth road all the way to Slapton
