This is a pleasant cycleway between Harpenden and Luton with very little traffic during the day. It's got a good surface and nice views, especially during the autumn time with the falling leaves.

Cafe Aroma is a nice little cafe where you can get a quality All Day Breakfast for less than a tenner (as at Oct 24). There's also cakes and quite a wide-ranging lunch menu. I like to sit in the little outside area looking onto the street and watch the world go by. The cafe is on quite a busy road in the centre of Southdown. There is an area nearby to lock up bikes 🚴🏼‍♂️

Note that the line runs well below street level and thus needs to be accessed by a longer flight of stairs at this entry point. With a bikepacking load, a better alternative seems to be a ramp on Ambrose Lane, which I only discovered in hindsight.

Wonderful stretch of running along the Lea Valley Walk / Chiltern Way between Harpenden and Luton. Enjoy ever-changing countryside landscapes of farmland, rolling hills and riverside scenery.

Batford Spring Nature Reserve hosts a number of fresh springs that are the source for many chalk-lined streams and ponds. There are a network of footpaths that will lead you around the reserve past grasslands, woods and rivers.
