Landwasser Viaduct “142-meter-long and 65-meter-high bridge piers” The 142-meter-long Landwasser Viaduct is the landmark of the Rhaetian Railway. The viaduct sweeps gracefully across the Landwasser Valley, leading directly into the rugged rock face and the Landwasser Tunnel. The Landwasser Viaduct's distinctive feature is its six closely spaced, 65-meter-high bridge piers, each with a span of only 20 meters. “Built in 1901–02” Text / Source: Rhaetian Railway Ltd., Bahnhofstrasse 25, Chur https://tickets.rhb.ch/de/products/landwasserviadukt

Landwasser Viaduct of the Rhaetian Railway A must-see for all railway enthusiasts – beauty and boldness combined. With its 65-meter-high, tapered piers, the viaduct is one of the most elegant bridge structures in Graubünden and the most photographed work of art on the Rhaetian Railway. The largest and most spectacular structure on the 63-kilometer-long Albula line between Thusis and St. Moritz. The Albula and Bernina lines of the Rhaetian Railway have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since mid-July 2008, only the third railway line in the world to receive this distinction. The construction of the three main piers of the viaduct in 1901/1902 was an architectural masterpiece, as they were built without scaffolding using only two cranes. After 106 years, the masonry and track bed were repaired for the first time. The natural stone viaduct, made of limestone dolomite, is 142 meters long and spans the wild Landwasser Valley in a sweeping curve, leading directly into a tunnel whose entrance is located on the sheer rock face. From the village of Filisur, a footpath leads in half an hour to a beautiful viewpoint where the viaduct can be admired (and photographed). The path continues either down to the river, under the viaduct and into the gorge, or, at the fork in the path, to the viewpoint, continuing for two hours to the Wiesner Viaduct. This can also be crossed on foot, offering a unique experience with breathtaking views. Landwasser Viaduct (near Filisur station) The Landwasser Viaduct is a 65-meter-high and long railway bridge. Its pillars rise majestically 65 meters into the air: The Landwasser Viaduct on the Albula line allows the Rhaetian Railway to travel 141.7 meters over the roaring Landwasser River. In a wide curve, the viaduct leads directly into a steep rock face. This breathtaking structure is now the most photographed subject on the Rhaetian Railway line. But the history of the viaduct's construction is also remarkable: The Greek-Swiss engineer Alexander Acatos (1873-1950) was commissioned to design the viaduct. He was also the one who later planned the expansion of Zurich's main train station for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). Under Acatos's direction, the five limestone piers with six semicircular arches, each spanning 20 meters, were constructed starting in March 1901. For cost reasons, a new construction technique was developed: the piers were built without external scaffolding. Instead, iron scaffolding was embedded in the three longest piers and adjusted in height as construction progressed. The three iron scaffolds were connected by crossbeams to which electric construction cranes could be mounted. These cranes lifted the necessary building materials to the appropriate pier height. A mixture of lime mortar and sand was used to bond the stones of the piers. The mortar came from a factory in Unterterzen on Lake Walen and was transported to the construction site of the Landwasser Viaduct on a 0.75-meter gauge construction railway laid along the future route. After only about a year and a half of construction, the Landwasser Viaduct was completed in October 1902. The structure has proven resilient ever since: the Landwasser Viaduct only required minor repairs in 2009. Today, the Landwasser Viaduct remains the symbol of the Rhaetian Railway and, as an imposing structure, invites passengers, tourists, and locals to take photographs.
