Originally conceived as a so-called "rondel," a semicircular tower open to the town and integrated into the inner wall of the city fortifications, the structure initially served defensive purposes. In 1750, Abbot Benedikt Rischer had a retreat built here, creating a hidden gem that had long been forgotten. This "garden house" thus became known locally as the Prelate's Tower. From the ground floor, with its grotto-like chapel, the path leads through a room with impressive frescoes up to the balcony room. There, visitors—just as the abbot and amateur astronomer once did—can feel a little closer to the heavens. This idyllic structure is now located in the parish garden and can be visited there.

City gate to the north. As the name suggests, the path leads "upwards". Gengenbach has long since outgrown the old city wall. Above the upper gate is the upper village.

The Kinzigtor is probably the "main entrance" to the old town. The mightiest tower of the city fortifications also houses a museum that focuses on the city wall.

The Kinzig Gate Tower is the largest and strongest of all towers and had the most important role in the city's defense. The battlements led to this tower from both sides. The city was guarded day and night from the watchman's apartment. The watchman's job was to impose a municipal toll on the approaching rafts on the Kinzig and on the traders arriving over the bridge.

The market fountain in Gengenbach, together with the market square, forms the center of the historic old town of Gengenbach in the Kinzig Valley. The fountain itself, with its striking knight figure, was created in 1582 by Max Spranger. The fountain basin dates from the 18th century. The knight is also called "Schwed" in Gengenbach.
