„Yesterday, upon the stair, I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish, I wish he'd go away... When I came home last night at three The man was waiting there for me But when I looked around the hall I couldn't see him there at all! Go away, go away, don't you come back any more! Go away, go away, and please don't slam the door... Last night I saw upon the stair A little man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today Oh, how I wish he'd go away...“ Hughes MEARNS: „Antigonish“ [I met a man who wasn't there]

The ruined fort here was built to defend Britain against a possible Napoleonic invasion. It has been adapted since then to provide sighting and coastal defence until the end of WW2. It's now a ruin but very interesting with lots of intact rooms and information boards to explain what everything used to be.

If it has rained a lot, then recommend if you want to go up and down a different way, you ascend from the north and descend on the south. The south has steps; the north is slippery and steep and needs trail shoes if not dry for some time. If only going up and down, do from the south. On a clear day, there are great views - Glastonbury, the Quantocks, Exmoor, the Welsh coast and the Brecon Beacons and the Mendips. It was once an Iron Age fort; the Romans called it "the Isle of Frogs" as it looked like a squatting frog from some angles and in those days, the marshes had not been drained. And at Easter, on the east side, a local group erects three crosses.

5월 4, 2021, The Drove Trail, Quantock Hills
One of the most majestic trails in the Quantocks, the Drove is a medieval track that travels along the top of the hills and forms an avenue with trees on both sides. Packed earth and rocky sections provide excellent hiking and cycling, and the Drove is wide although uneven throughout. There are many points along the Drove's route where you can enjoy simply phenomenal views across the lower Somerset landscape. Highland cattle and sheep also graze the fields beside it, so don't be surprised if you peer over a gate and find a furry face looking back at you.

A set of zig-zagging steps from the beach up onto Brean Downs (National Trust) Nature Reserve, these steep concrete steps thankfully get the climb done pretty quick! These are also part of the England Coast Path.

A lovely combe that feels forgotten in time! Beautiful ancient woodland and streams to splash in.

Holford Combe is one of those very rare places in the UK that's just as much fun up as down. Actually, I'm not sure that such a place exists - and it's a complete blast heading down, as those many, many stream crossings will attest - but it's of a sufficient gradient that you gain quite a lot of height quite quickly, and those self-same stream crossings that are such fun going downhill serve to distract your attention from how hard you're working. And it's all in gorgeous surroundings, too!

A last blast back to the car park takes you down one of the Quantocks' many combes or wooded valleys. It's along the path of an old river and is littered with rocks and roots and water splashes, making for a memorable end for those who love sublime singletrack!
