If I had not stopped for the cattle grid I think I would have managed this climb but it was hard to get moving once I had stopped. Next time I'll cycle across the grid which turned out to be full of dirt and therefore ok to cycle across.

Nice road onto the Quantock Hills from Over Stowey in the east towards Crowcombe gate and the car park on the top of the Quantocks. It's quite a tough climb but the views are great.

‘Clyce’ or ‘clyse’ is a regional word for sluice and you’ll find many if you walk along the River Parrett. The Somerset Levels is reclaimed land and barely above sea level, resulting in a sprawling wetland area. The water management of the Levels has been going for hundreds, if not thousands of years and sluices are an important part of controlling the run-off from the rivers. Many of the clyces you’ll find have been in place for a considerable amount of time and are a fascinating part of the local history. New ones are still built today.

Am I still in England? This feels like being transported to NZ or Canada! With the ferns, soft grippy dirt and technical tree roots this little trail is a hoot! I recommend taking it easy the first time and then heading back up the fire road to have a proper rip because it's so much fun when you're not riding it blind!
