The "HOHE FLUM" lookout tower is located on the highest elevation of the Dinkelberg, approx. 536 meters above sea level. The Hohe Flum Turm has had an eventful history. In 1830, citizens from the Schopfheim area had the idea of building an observation tower on this hilltop. In 1873, the pharmacist Fleiner, as chairman of the tower construction commission, was required to collect the estimated cost of around 620 guilders through fundraising. A song festival then raised 773 guilders. The actual construction costs amounted to 1,515 guilders and 52 kreuzers. In the end it was the community of Wiechs that took over the ownership of the tower for a remaining amount of 560 marks. (In the meantime the currency in Baden had changed from guilders to marks) The tower was opened to the public at an inauguration ceremony on August 8th, 1874. 1914-18 the tower served as an air observation post during the First World War. After that, the tower fell into disrepair. Thanks to an initiative by the Schwarzwaldverein Schopfheim in 1924, which provided 100 marks, the community of Wiechs renovated the tower at an additional cost of 1,000 marks and saved it from total decay. During World War II 1939-1945, the tower was again used as an observation platform for enemy air raids. The stone Hohe Flum viewing tower has a square base and 62 steps lead to the viewing platform. Today the tower, which is surrounded by eleven stately old linden trees, is a popular place where the words spoken by pharmacist Fleiner at the inauguration ceremony: "Peace to the States ! Freedom to the peoples! Cheerfulness to all who visit this height!" again give a special meaning to their meaning.
