The Cistercians, who settled in Schlierbach Castle on February 22, 1355, were asked to pray for the salvation of the Wallsee family. Over the decades, they transformed this castle into a monastery. However, the turmoil of the Reformation also meant the end of monastic life for Schlierbach. The building fell into disrepair for 64 years, until 1620 when the Cistercians from Rein near Graz settled in the monastery. Her task was to take care of the pastoral care in the area and to let religious life flourish again. A skilful policy on the part of those responsible meant that the Schlierbach Abbey has been able to exist without interruption since that time. From the last quarter of the 17th century, members of the Carlone family of artists from Northern Italy, together with abbots who were enthusiastic about building, renovated the monastery from the ground up. We can still admire what they planned and built in Schlierbach today.

Schlierbach Abbey is a Cistercian monastery with one of the most magnificent church rooms in Austria. The large building has many uses today. High school students enliven the many rooms, the smell of cheese permeates the house, artists and craftsmen meet in the stained glass and many visitors marvel at this lively house. A tour of Schlierbach Abbey is a journey of discovery into a spiritual world whose power and fascination is still alive today. Interesting monastery complex with an excellent cheese dairy!

Currently 9/2021 the collegiate church is unfortunately closed for about a year due to renovation work. The monastery café with panorama terrace (great panoramic view of the Kremstal) and the monastery shop are still open. Guided tours of the monastery and the show dairy also take place. It makes sense to compare the dates with the arrival times.

From a distance you can see the striking construction of the Schlierbach Abbey. Once stood in place of the monastery a documentary first mentioned in 1137 inconspicuous castle. In 1355 this castle became a Cistercian monastery. During the Reformation, the monastery was closed and decayed. At the beginning of the 17th century, Kremsmünster Abbey took over the administration of the monastery. Today, the Schlierbach Abbey is well-known not only because of its magnificent Baroque facilities, but also because of its "Schlierbacher" produced in the Klosterkäserei. A cheese that not only leaves a special taste, but is also remembered for its smell :-).
