A special sight in Pürgg is the St. John's Chapel, which is situated on a panoramic hill with its world-famous Romanesque frescoes from the 12th century, which is one of the most beautiful wall paintings in Europe. Due to certain stylistic features, such as the flat dome in the presbytery, which is similar to that of Lambach (Upper Austria), the building could have been built before 1122, the year in which the Traungau family inherited the large Eppenstein property. The certainly enigmatic motif is the cat-mouse war, which has been interpreted as a battle between imperial power and the papacy of the time. The castle symbolizes the power of the pope, and also depicts the physically weak mice. The secular power over the papacy begins to break down, the cats are repelled.
