The glacier is impressive, and its retreat shocking. The pictured glacial whirlpool has completely disappeared. A lake with icebergs remains. How long will this last?

The St. Pöltener Hut is prominently located in a gap between the Tauernkogel (2,988 m) to the west and the nearby Weinbichl (2,556 m) to the southeast (behind it rises a mighty mountain range with the 2,922 m high Hochgasser). To the south, the valley of the Tauernbach falls steeply to the valley of the Gschlößbach. In the opposite direction to the north, the valley with the Tauernbach and Felberbach as well as the lakes Langsee and Plattachsee also falls steeply to the Hintersee, through which the Felberbach flows. The path up to the Weinbichl only overcomes a height difference of around 80 m, but is very steep and difficult to walk due to gravel and scree.

At the "Alten Tauern" at an altitude of 2,513 m, there are beautiful views of the surrounding mountain ranges and to the north down to Lake Tauern. To the northwest lies the massive rocky hump "Weinbichl" at an altitude of 2,556 m. On the way to the St. Pöltener Hut, this rocky hump must be overcome - with some climbing (partly secured with ropes) on the southeast side and a steep descent (or ascent) in the northwest.

750 meters of altitude must be overcome on this path between the Tauernbachtal (1500 m) and the Grünsee (2243 m). With a multitude of bends, the path winds along the steep mountain slope northwest of the Messelingbach. As you go up, the views to the west into the valley with Tauern- and Gschlößbach and the alpine villages of Außer- and Innergschlöß, and especially the Venediger group with its glaciers, become better and more fascinating. This section of the path is the lower part of the Three Lakes Trail. Above it, the trail continues along the Messelingbach past the Grüner, Schwarzer and Grauer See.

The interesting path, which winds its way along the steep mountain slope east of the Schlatenbach with many bends, overcomes a height of 400 meters (1740 m down in the valley of the Gschlößbach; 2140 m at the Salzbodensee). It goes past mighty, powerfully rushing waterfalls. There are changing views up and over to the mountains of the Venediger group with their impressive glaciers, as well as down into the wider valley with the Gschlößbach.

Across the widened valley of the Gschlößbach, there are wonderful views to the west of the Venediger group with its glaciers (especially the Schlatenkees). In front of them, in the valley, lies the alpine village of Innergschlöß.
