One of my favourite spots on Dartmoor, the village has real character, good ice cream, coffee and pizza.

A few lights in the tunnel brighten things up, but there are a few spots where visibility can be a little low.

Left Lake is a small lake on the right of the Two Moors Way trail from Ivybridge heading north to Red Lake. It's a great little pool with a peaty bottom, so the water is quite dark. It warms up well if you get a few days of sunshine, perfect for a quick dip on a long run on the south moor.

Red Lake is an area of former china clay workings, with a peaceful lake and volcano-shaped spoil heap. Today it's a grass covered hill with great views over the south moor. The lakes in the area are inviting on a hot day, and it's a good site for a responsible wild camp. The track from Ivybridge is a long run, but the navigation is easy and it feels brilliantly wild. OuterEdge Events hold a popular Dartmoor Volcano race to this point each September.

A flat scenic stretch of cycling on a tidal road that may be covered in water during a spring high tide as well as two hours before and after.

Noss Mayo is a hidden gem. Quiet, picturesque and on the waterside of the River Yealm, it is a wonderful place to visit or start a hike. You can take a ferry from here across to Newton Ferries or to the South West Coast Path on the other side of the estuary. There are two pubs, The Swan Inn and The Ship Inn. It is the perfect hideaway.

Mothecombe Beach is a great place to stop for a picnic. At low tide there is a large sandy beach and rockpools to explore. The beach is owned by the Flete Estate. There is a café in the car park which is well worth a visit.

A beautiful section of route 27 Granite Way where the trail opens up as you pass across the Meldon Viaduct. Views across show the undulating hills of the highest area within Dartmoor National park where High Willhays and Yes Tor are situated.

Yes its a tad on the pricey side, but a good place to stop, indoor cycle rack, food quality always good.

Hound of the Baskervilles cafe, welcoming to cyclists, very good food at very reasonable prices.

Princetown is a village located within Dartmoor National Park in Devon, England. It is the principal settlement of the civil parish of Dartmoor Forest. The village has its origins in 1785, when Sir Thomas Tyrwhitt, then secretary to the Prince of Wales, leased a large area of moorland from the Duchy of Cornwall estate, hoping to convert it into good farmland. He also proposed that a prison be built on Dartmoor to house the thousands of captives of the Napoleonic Wars and the later War of 1812. The site was given by the Prince of Wales, who held the lands of the Duchy of Cornwall to which the whole moor belonged. This is why the settlement is named Princetown. Princetown is the site of Dartmoor Prison, which was built in 1806 and is still in use today. Princetown is also home to the National Park Visitor Centre, which offers exhibitions and displays about Dartmoor’s history, wildlife and culture.
