Geography: A prominent granite tor on the northeastern side of Dartmoor, near the higher moorland areas. It forms part of the rugged Dartmoor landscape with expansive views on clear days. This tor is just a stone's throw from the nearby car park and towers over Dartmoor. Very impressive, good for a short tour, as a starting point for visiting other tors, for a picnic (depending on the unpredictable weather here 😉) or recently also for climbing (you could see a few people free climbing - but I can't say for sure whether it's allowed) and for treasure hunts. Otherwise just beautiful nature and (outside of tourist times) nice and quiet.

It is a distinctive rock, not only for its magnificent views, but also for its huge rock pool at the summit, formed by the weathering of weakened feldspar crystals. Hound Tor is a mass of granite boulders supposedly resembling two huge hounds. It's fun to scramble here and the running is ace, the springy grass is great fun and the rocks are grippy even when wet. There is normally an ice cream van in the car park.

Beautiful granite formation. With a little imagination you can see many characters here... maybe even the Hound of Baskerville.
