Helmet, helmet, helmet! ;) I saw and heard the ibex and their accompanying Rolling Stones. On the Völlerinsteig trail and others on the Hohe Wand... a helmet is worth it, no matter how difficult the climb or trail is. Apparently, ibex can always be "lurking," especially during the week when there are more of them than people.

It's also quite manageable on the descent, especially if you're already familiar with the route from the ascent. In winter, the gully can be icy, making crampons highly advisable. However, the sections further down might be ice-free if you're lucky, as they're more exposed to the sun or something like that, I suppose. Anyway, it worked out quite well on January 20, 2026 ;).

Easy enough for children to reach, but challenging enough to make the climb interesting.

The Hohe Wand Nature Park offers a spectacular viewing terrace with the Skywalk, which was built directly into the rock and gives visitors the feeling of floating over the abyss. The view stretches far across the Vienna Alps to Lake Neusiedl. Secured by iron bars, the platform is an impressive experience - but not for people with a fear of heights. The nature park is open all year round and, in addition to the Skywalk, offers numerous hiking trails, climbing routes, playgrounds and even a zoo, making it ideal for family outings. The atmosphere here is particularly unique early in the morning or at sunrise.

The Herrgottschnitzerhaus on the Hohe Wand is a rustic mountain hut that is almost 100 years old and has retained its original charm, apart from a few minor additions. The friendly hosts, the excellent food and the great view were particularly appreciated. Unfortunately, the hut is currently closed and there are no signs of it reopening any time soon.

The Piestinger Cross on the Hohe Wand, right next to the Herrgottschnitzerhaus, towers impressively into the sky and offers a wonderful view. The ascent from Dreistetten often leads over the Einhornhöhle and the challenging Drobilsteig, which offers variety with a few ladders. Whether down the donkey path or with an extended loop - the tour is particularly popular, even with families with children. The cross itself was erected by the founders of the Herrgottschnitzerhaus in memory of fallen comrades who had accidents in the mountains. With a bit of luck, you can escape the fog in the valley here and enjoy the sun - a worthwhile rest stop after an exciting climb!
