Exeter Quay, also known as Exeter Quayside, is a district of Exeter on the River Exe and the Exeter Ship Canal. It was used as a port since prehistoric times, when a sandstone outcrop was used to unload the ships of overseas traders.[1] However, in 1381, the Countess Weir closed the river to shipping. In 1566, a canal was completed to allow ships access. Over time, the number of ships using the quay increased, and so the quay was extended in the late 17th century. Further extension took place in 1830 when a new canal basin was dug. However, in 1840, the railway reached Exeter, and shipping began to decline. The quay is no longer used for shipping, but mainly for recreational purposes.

Using the power of moving water to drive a mill wheel is an ancient invention of the human spirit of discovery, the origins of which can be traced back to times long past. Thanks to such a construction, human or animal muscle power could be easily replaced by the power of the natural elements through a watercourse - natural or artificially created - in order to grind grain into corn or press oil from fruit, for example. There are essentially two different ways of driving watermills: * Either the flowing water simply hits the blades of the water wheel from below to set it in motion; or * the water is guided above the wheel - usually through a so-called "mill channel" - and falls onto the blades; this type of construction is more efficient due to natural gravity.

Exeter Ship Canal is a canal leading from (and beside) the River Exe to Exeter Quay in the city of Exeter, Devon. It was first constructed in the 1560s and was the first canal to be built in Britain since Roman times. It was also the first canal in England to use the pound lock. The canal was built to bypass the weirs that had been erected on the river by the Countess of Devon and later by the Earls of Devon, which prevented ships from reaching Exeter and forced them to unload at Topsham. The canal was enlarged and extended several times over the centuries and reached its present form in the 1830s. The canal basin was also built at that time and became a busy port with warehouses and workshops. Today, the canal is mainly used for leisure activities such as boating, walking and cycling. You can follow the Exe Estuary Trail alongside the canal and enjoy the scenic views of the river and the countryside.

Countess Wear Bridges are two bridges in Exeter, Devon that cross the River Exe and the Exeter Ship Canal. They have a D-Day connection because they were used for military training by British paratroops prior to the Normandy landings in 1944. The bridges were chosen because they resembled two bridges in France that were part of the Operation Deadstick, a daring mission to capture and hold the crossings over the Caen Canal and River Orne. The training involved rehearsing different scenarios and tactics in case the plan went wrong on D-Day.

Have crossed the busy road at the Countess Wear lights many times, but not noticed this board until very recently. It tells an interesting story...

The quay has a car park, a number of restaurants to eat at and trails to walk.

Bickleigh Mill is an 18th century water mill which is still working to this day. The Mill is now also home to shops and eateries. With its gorgeous riverside location it is a lovely place to start or finish a walk, or stop partway along to refuel.

Check out the ridge Cafe by the Quay climbing centre for a coffee. Or on the other side of the quay there is the coffee cellar.

Memorial plaque at the bridge reads "In May 1944, these bridges played an important part in the preparations for D-Day. They were used over a period of three days and nights, for rehearsals of the famous and crucial glider borne attack on the bridge over the Canal de Caen (Pegasus Bridge) and the River Orne (Horsa Bridge), by the Second Battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, on the night 5/6 June 1944."

The Exeter Ship Canal runs for five miles from the River Exe to Exeter Quay. Opened in 1566 it sees little ship traffic now due to the swing and lifting bridge which makes navigating it more challenging. You are now much more likely to see kayaks, canoes and paddleboards on the water with cyclists and walkers enjoying the flat path alongside it.

Great place for lunch or a Devon cream tea (cream first, jam on top - the proper way - this is Devon!). There's also a gift shop adjoining.

Very busy main road but well provided with cycle paths so no need use the road.

Once a thriving port, Exeter Quay is now a stunning place to explore or to have a bite to eat. The Customs House often has exhibitions on whilst the buildings that stand on the edge of the river have history seeping out of their ageing brickwork. You're spoilt for choice for places to eat and you can also hire e-bikes on the quayside, and explore further. If you want to take to the water, you can hire canoes, kayaks and even pedalos here too; watch out for stroppy geese and hungry swans.

Once upon a time, Topsham was one of the busiest ports in England although it's hard to imagine now. The dock is situated in a particularly useful position, even though the river was initially navigable for boats all the way to Exeter. The maritime history of the town is genuinely incredible and you can learn all about it at the Topsham Museum. Today, the dock offers lovely views over the moored boats on the Exe. There's an antique shop full of interesting items and a pub with lots of outside seating.
