표지판은 Otterbourne Hill을 오르는 길 왼쪽에 있는 벤치에 있습니다. 도로는 매우 붐비므로 자전거를 벤치에 두고 걸어갔습니다. 교회는 밖에서는 꽤 평범하지만 안은 평화롭고 고요하며 매우 흥미로운 역사를 가지고 있습니다. 교구장 및 학장 목록(1279년부터 시작!)은 매우 인상적입니다. 나중에 벤치로 돌아와서 사모사를 먹었습니다(Winchester의 역사적인 변두리에 있는 고급 상점에서 구입한 것인데, 솔직히 아주 맛있는 사모사는 아니었지만 즐거운 휴식이었습니다). 근처의 옛날식 도로 표지판에는 사우샘프턴까지 '8마일'이라고 적혀 있어 한 시간 안에 도착할 수 있을 거라는 희망을 주었지만, 실제로는 약 1시간 40분이 걸렸고, 최종 경로는 8마일보다 훨씬 더 길었습니다!

The Hockley Viaduct, near Winchester, Hampshire, is a historic railway structure built in the 1880s as part of the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway (DNSR). Spanning the River Itchen and its floodplain, the viaduct is about 1,250 feet (380 metres) long and consists of 33 arches, made mainly of brick with some concrete sections added during later repairs. It carried trains between Winchester and Southampton until the line closed to passengers in 1960 and to freight in 1966. After falling into disrepair, it was restored in 2013 as part of the National Cycle Network (Route 23), linking Winchester with Southampton for cyclists and walkers. Today, the Hockley Viaduct is valued both as a piece of Victorian engineering heritage and as a scenic pedestrian and cycling route, offering fine views across the Itchen Valley and the South Downs.

St Catherine's Hill is a prominent chalk downland hill on the outskirts of Winchester, notable for its layered historical and ecological importance. Now a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) managed as a nature reserve, its summit is ringed by the impressive earthworks of a univallate Iron Age hillfort dating back over 2,000 years. The top is marked by a distinctive copse of beech trees, known as 'The Clump', which contains the scant ruins of the 12th-century St Catherine's Chapel, while the hillside features a turf-cut labyrinth known as the Miz-Maze; the entire site provides spectacular views over the city, the Itchen Valley, and supports a rich variety of wildflowers and butterflies, including the protected Chalkhill Blue.

As a memorial to the many dead, such memorials – usually called “war memorials” in English – are still very important today. “Now, Lord, you let your servant depart in peace, as you have said...” says the so-called “Hymn of Simeon” (Luke’s Gospel, Chapter 2, Verse 29). However, the people commemorated here did not depart in peace, but became victims of war and tyranny. This is why the term “dead soldiers’ memorial” is now sometimes used in German instead of the previously most common “war memorial”. However, such a war memorial, which one encounters so often on the road, regardless of nationality, language and name, is always a testimony to the horror of war and tyranny – still significant and current today. They all have two essential functions, and this is renewed for each generation: -1- Commemorate and remember the victims -2- Remind people to keep the peace

Lovely village pub to have lunch

This pub has a big garden and we stopped there many times for a break during a long walk through the surrounding countryside. Food and drinks all great.

The pathway up is unclear from this point. Note however that there is an easy to follow route up with mostly steps on the south west side of the hill
