Beautiful castle overlooking the water. In general, it's nice to walk across the island, the sailing boats in the bays, the lively ferry traffic, the harbor lies like a beehive, the awareness of being here in the middle of the Atlantic. A dream.

The burial chamber here dates to about 2000 BCE. It's a Bronze Age entrance grave with a kerb, inner passage and burial chamber clearly visible. Managed by English Heritage but open and free to visit it's a short push, walk from the nearest road.

A 10 to 15 minute walk from Hugh Town will bring you to Porth Loo Beach, yet another beauty spot on St Mary's Island. It is sheltered by Newford Island to the south and Taylor's Island to the north. If you're staying in High Town it is a lovely place to watch the sunset and be back before its dark.

Porthmellon (also known as Porth Mellon) boasts white sand, turquoise waters and views across to Tresco and Samson. You will often see people enjoying watersports here with kayakers, windsurfers and sailors taking to the water. It's just a short walk from Hugh Town so is a perfect place for a short walk for a sea swim and drink in The Beach cafe.

The white sands of Old Town Bay stretch out in front of the tiny Old Town. Small boats bob in the turquoise water making this a calm and relaxing place to pause on a hike. There is a car park here, plus toilets and despite its small size, two cafes for refreshment.

A small headland divides Carn Lêh Cove from Old Town Bay. It is a rocky beach with Peninnis Head stretching out to the horizon to the west.

In 1911, this lighthouse was built to replace the one on St Agnes Island which had been beaming a light since 1680. It houses an electrical light which is manned electronically by Trinity House in Harwich.

Woolpack Battery was built in the late 19th, early 20th century as defenses for a signalling and re-fuelling station being built by the Navy. With a south south westerly aspect, the sunsets here are gorgeous, but the views are beautiful any time of the day.
