Langsett was a training ground for tanks, armoured cars and artillery guns and there are lots of clues to this past if you look around, including this tank shooting target. There is another on the other side of Sugden Clough.

Great early morning walk.

Langsett Reservoir boasts well-maintained paths suitable for various abilities, making it ideal for walking, cycling, or even a leisurely stroll. The surrounding woodland and moorland offer diverse landscapes, changing beautifully with the seasons. The dam wall itself is an impressive feat of engineering, and walking across it provides great views of the reservoir and surrounding countryside.

A great walk. Free parking. Cafe across road and down hill a bit from car park

Beautiful woodland, popular with dog walkers and cyclists.

Now just a ruin, this former farmhouse was used as target practice during WW2.

The embankment of Langsett Reservoir is 352m/1, 156ft long and has a depth of 35m/117ft, to the old river bed beneath. When full, the reservoir holds 59 million m3 or 1,409 million gallons of water. The castellated valvehouse at the northern end of the dam wall is supposed to have been modelled on the gatehouse of Lancaster Castle. The reservoir took 14 years to build, between 1889 and 1904. The reservoir is now controlled by Yorkshire Water, and its naturally acidic, brown water is treated at the modern Langsett Treatment Works just below the embankment wall to the right.

Thickwoods Lane was reinforced to accommodate tanks during the Second World War, probably for the army training which used the area around North America Farm. the brick rubble from which the track is made came from bombed out houses in nearby Sheffield.

A lovely bench, with a quirky plaque attached, in a great spot overlooking the reservoir.

In the days when the Empire was being opened up, it was the custom to name far-flung farmsteads after the places which were, in those days, on the edge of the known world. That is how North America got its name; other farms were called Quebec and Botany Bay. It is a sad ruin now, like Brookhouse Farm it was abandoned when the reservoir was built. You might notice the pockmarks in some of the stones of the broken-down walls. These caused when the ruined farm was used for target practice by troops in training

This ancient track was used by farmers in the Upper Derwent and Woodlands Valley to take their livestock to the nearest market, which was at Penistone. The Cut Gate track runs from the reconstructed Slippery Stones bridge at the head of the Howden Reservoir up Bull Clough and over Featherbed Moss to Mickleden Edge before dropping over Hingcliff Hill into Langsett. Stone Age arrow heads have ben found in the peat close to the Cut Gate track, so it seems that these now bleak and inhospitable moors have seen signs of human activity for many thousands of years. Near the bridge are the remains of Brookhouse Farm, which was one of several which were depopulated in the interests of water purity when the reservoir was built at the start of the 20th century. In 1588, so a story says, the rent for this farm was a red rose at Christmas and a snowball at midsummer!

Feb 2023- wet underfoot and wild winds. Not all puddles are equal! Over my knee at one point. I'd advise waterproof boots and gaitors as it's a couple of miles of peat bog and water. There are better views than the trig point but nice to achieve.

Beautiful walk but can get busy

A large section requires dogs to be on a short lead due to live stock. Take your rubbish home with you.

Bring a brew, enjoy the view (take your rubbish home!!!).

A very muddy and boggy part of the world! The trig point is surrounded by it's own moat of peat mud, so take care when visiting and wear waterproof footwear as it's very wet.
