Nice traffic free route with lots of places to stop for refreshments along the way. Recommend the bakery at Winscombe. Sadly, the numerous bike gates along the route are a pain if you're on a mountain/hybrid bike as they are too narrow.

Take the climb up the back of Portbury or Caswell hill and enjoy the descent down as a reward. As a climb it's got a sort of alpine feel, and while it's never really steep it does go on a bit. Due to the traffic I much prefer this as a descent, In a similar vein to Brockley Combe but that's overall a nicer climb.

Look out for the long right bend - make sure you brake beforehand!

The Strawberry Line is a traffic-free trail between Yatton and Cheddar. The gravel path follows the route of a former railway line that once carried delicious cargos of strawberries from Cheddar. The line was well usd for nearly a century until its closure in 1965. Level and easygoing, the trail is suitable for all ages and abilities. It winds through some very pretty Somerset countryside, too.

Awesome views towards Bristol and smooth, sinuous tarmac—what’s not to love? Up or down, it’s a treat (different flavours, of course).

As a cyclist and driver I cannot recommend for bikes - too much impact for motor traffic whether descending or ascending

A charming village. The church is quite spectacular and there is a cafe right next to it. A better place to stop before taking on the gorge... and it's tourists!

Fabulous gravel track. As long as you're not too precious about getting grit and dirt on your bike, it's possible on any bike... smoother than most roads!

Axbridge is a picturesque former market town on the southern fringe of the Mendip Hills. This small town has a medieval market square, narrow streets and old buildings, including timber framed buildings. These include some interesting Tudor houses and a 13th century parish church The flat moorland of the Axe Valley lies to the south of the town. In spite of the name, the River Axe is over a mile away in this direction. It is possible that the river once flowed closer to the town. The mediaeval town is strung out along its main street, on the road which links Cheddar to the coast.

This special site is designated as a Site of Special Scientific interest for its valuable wildlife habitats and is a nationally important site for its archaeology from the late Stone Age and Bronze Age through to the Second World War. Black Down provides the largest area of open access on the Mendip Hills at over 400 ha. Black Down, like most heathlands, is formed through a combination of factors– soil type, rainfall and human activity. The underlying Old Red Sandstone rock together with high rainfall created a waterlogged and acidic soil. The removal of tree cover by our Bronze Age ancestors 2,000 years ago helped to make sure that the soil stayed damp and acid. Only certain plants can survive in this type of ground. The key species include heather or ling, bell heather, bilberry, purple moor grass and European gorse, along with mosses and lichens. Now the bracken is managed by harvesting and grazing by cattle and wild ponies to allow the heathers and grasses to flourish again. Black Down supports a wide variety of birds, mammals, reptiles and invertebrates.

Beacon Batch is the highest point in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. From the trig point, you get breathtaking panoramic views that stretch over the Bristol Channel into Wales, over Weston-super-Mare, the Chew Valley and across the Mendips. There are Bronze Age burial mounds at the summit, too. A very special place with lots of great walking to enjoy all around.

You can this one hard as it flattens enough in the turns to catch your breath.

Nice offroad stretch that's pretty straight and flat so maybe not too interesting in itself, but a nice alternative to the roads if you're going somewhere. Do-able on a roadbike but probably not that enjoyable, ideal for hybrid/gravel bikes

Good surface and therefore I prefer descending this hill and going up Wraxall hill. It has a couple of turns, but can be taken at speed. Would be good for doing loops Belmont to Wraxall
