The concrete outlet tower serves as the central control point for the reservoir's water supply. Connected by a bridge to the main dam, the tower houses sluice gates and valves that regulate the flow and distribution of water to the River Chew and the local water supply.

11월 2, 2024, Stanton Drew Stone Circles and Cove
The Stanton Drew stone circles are located just outside the village of Stanton Drew in the English county of Somerset. The largest stone circle is the Great Circle, standing in a 113 metres in diameter and is in-fact the second largest stone circle to be discovered in Britain. After Avebury and It’s considered to be one of the largest Neolithic monuments to have ever been built. The date of the construction is not actually accurately known of, but it’s thought to have been built between 3000 and 2000 BCE. These standing stone circles of which have been studied since John Aubrey's visit in 1664. It was only made a scheduled monument of it is today in 1982. Please be aware that an entrance fee is charged by the landowner for any entry in among the grounds of the Stone Circles and any public access is at his discretion only. NO DOGS ALLOWED! As the land is used for agriculture purposes and usually has cattle grazing on the fields where the standing stones are. Please be aware that the English Heritage sites do not permit drone flying from or over sites in our care, by any circumstances except by contractors or partners undertaking flights for a specific purpose, who satisfy stringent CAA criteria, have the correct insurances and permissions, and are operating under controlled conditions only. Just having experienced this ourselves before.

Pensford Viaduct is a disused railway bridge. It was built in 1874 to carry the Bristol and North Somerset railway over the River Chew. It was closed in 1968 and is now preserved as a historic building. Great views of the viaduct can be had from Stanton Lane.

Lovely looped trail. the landscape is lumped and bumped in the most weirdest of ways. I realised that the mounds were actually man made from the mining days, and grass and nature had covered them all over. Sheep graze freely in the area.

Beautiful Landscape & Walking Route Along River Chew Accesible From Pensford Bridge. Some initial parts of the path gets quite muddy after prior days of rain but can still walk through with boots. Best to walk after few days of dry weather.

Chew Valley Lake is the 5th largest artificial lake in the UK. It was constructed in the 1950s to supply drinking water for Bristol and the nearby area. There are brilliant views of the lake and surrounding countryside as you pass along the dam.

This is the third-largest complex of pre-historic standing stones in England. The 26 remaining standing stones are all that remains of the probably ceremonial stone circle constructed in the Neolithic period around 2500 BCE. Today the area is looked after by English Heritage and free to enter.

Absolutely lovely, relatively flat throughout and is generally pretty quiet. Some areas have a few bumps thanks to roots and some parts during the wetter winter weather get a couple of centimetres of running water here and there. Overall one of my favourite places to cycle and will continue to feature on my routes!

Impressive 4500 year-old stone circle with some English Heritage info signage at the entrance. Take a minute to touch the stones and imagine the people who put them there. There’s an honesty box at the gate which suggests a £1 donation.

Stanton Drew stone circle is 100% worth a visit. An ancient, neolithic complex of stone circles. There is so much history in this landscape; the nearby Pensford village was first officially recorded in 1151.

Brilliant! A beautiful and peaceful cycleway akin to the Bristol to Bath cycleway... but much quieter!

Velvet Bottom is part of the wider Cheddar Complex Sites of Special Scientific Interest which is a network of nature reserves on the Mendip Hills. Each reserve has its own unique character and wildlife. All of the nature reserves are Sites of Special Scientific Interest, which provide protection to the plants and animals found there. This nature reserve lies on the floor of a dry river valley and is long and narrow in shape. Most of the reserve can be seen from the main path. The 42-acre (17 ha) reserve is mostly rough grassland with small areas of woodland and scrub. The reserve has a long history of lead mining and there is still much evidence to be found of the site’s industrial heritage. Velvet Bottom has been managed by Somerset Wildlife Trust since 1975 and was purchased from the former owners, Bristol Water, in 1998. Please clean up after your dog on sites on the Mendip Hills AONB to help protect the wildlife and stop grasslands becoming polluted.

Stanton Drew Stone Circle is a breathtaking ancient monument next to the River Chew. Composed of three separate circles, it is the third largest complex of standing stones in England and was built roughly 4,500 years ago. Stanton Drew is not as visited as the more famous examples at Avebury and Stonehenge, meaning you can enjoy the landmark in relative solitude. The stone circles are in the care of English Heritage.
