Fascinating Ham Hill is well worth a visit, being at once a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, an Iron Age hill fort, a Roman site, a Local Nature Reserve and a country park.

HISTORY The Tower dates from the 13th century. The embattled top and cornice were added in the 15th century. The Porch and room above were added about 1325. It will be noticed that it is not bonded in to the wall of the Tower. The room above, sometimes call a Parvise, may have been used for school purposes, or as a place from which the priest or other person could watch the church. The main doors were probably replaced in the mid 1800s and are reputed to have come from Ilchester Jail when it closed. The Chancel The east window (containing some mediaeval glass) and wall are 15th century. There is no physical evidence of an apse. The other windows on the north and south date from about 1250. Those on the north may have been altered in the 15th century. The altar is Jacobean and the altar rails date from Charles I. Fine specimens of 12th century corbel tables are to be seen on the north and south walls. Note the scratch dial on the south side. The Nave The fine Norman Chancel Arch is thought to have been rebuilt. It was restored in 1862. The Wall Paintings on the wall above the chancel arch are 14th or 15th century; those on the north and south walls are 17th century. In the north wall is a fine recumbent effigy of Thomas Strode who died in 1595. The Recesses in the north and south walls are probably the one an Easter Sepulchre, and the other an Aumbry. The double Piscina in the south east angle dates from around 1300. The Font is late 12th or early 13th century and was originally centrally in the nave. It was moved in 1916. The North Transept was added about 1190. It has a typical ribbed vault with rich stiff leaf corbels of the finest Transitional style, a style between Norman and Early English, which is rare in Somerset. The north window dates from about 1430. The 15th century stone Screen at the entrance was probably brought with the stone altar from the Chapel of St Nicholas in the Castle at West Stoke. St Michael's Hill is situated approximately 10-15 minute walk from the road going through Montacute village… There is a tower upon it, which you can access, and climb the spiral stairs to look out across southern Somerset. Worth a visit for the view, even if only once…

There is a single pub called the “The Prince Of Wales” at Hamhill, which sells, ice cream, ales, ciders, and food… With out door seating, overlooking the rolling Slopes.

Ham Hill is a magnificent country park with panoramic views over the South Somerset Moors, Exmoor and the Mendip Hills from the top. During the Iron Age, a huge hill fort would have stood here which would have been one of the largest in the south west. Today, there's a number of hiking trails and bike routes through the park.

Owned and managed by the National Trust, Stoke-sub-Hamdon’s priory is a phenomenal group of 14th and 15th-century buildings, largely made from the local hamstone. Grade I listed and a scheduled ancient monument, the priory and its buildings have an old kind of grandeur to them. Despite its name, there isn’t and has never been a priory here. The site was built as a chantry college and was subsequently tenanted after the Dissolution. It’s a fascinating place to wander around and is a particularly good example of hamstone construction.

This hamlet is gloriously picturesque and many of its buildings are made from local hamstone. This type of stone is unique to nearby Ham Hill and has a yellow hue; it lends the buildings a particularly pretty aesthetic. Norton-sub-Hamdon is home to a manor house of 17th-century origins and a water mill dating back from around the same time. In the grounds of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, there’s a 17th-century stone dovecote. Although you can’t go inside, it contains 400 stone nests and is said to have provided pigeons for the manor. There’s an old pub here if you’re looking for somewhere to put your feet up, otherwise, simply walking around the hamlet is like stepping back in time.

Ham Hill affords wonderful views over Stoke-sub-Hamdon nestled in the countryside. The hill was quarried for local Ham Stone for many centuries and the 15-strong stone circle you find there was built by the Millennium Project to commemorate this. There is also a war memorial on the summit.

St Michael's Hill affords breathtaking views over the village of Montacute and the serene Somerset countryside. On the summit, you find St Michael's Tower, a folly built in the 18th century. Shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066, a castle was built on the summit. However, nothing remains of the castle today.
