The pretty village of North Pickenham lies on the route of the Peddars Way long-distance trail. The impressive St Andrew's Church is worth a look, while the nearby Grade I listed St Mary's Church has murals that date back to the 11th century. St Mary's is a remnant of the deserted medieval village of Houghton on the Hill.

The fantastic bailey gate here reminds me of a similar specimen I saw in Belgium at Veurne. Not far from here is the Red Lion Hostel which is run by a 90 year old lady called Alison, wonderful place to stay if you get the chance.

Impressive landmark on the northern approach to Hunstanton.

Excellent cafe/tearoom, for eat in or takeaway on the benches outside the front or opposite on the green. Open 10am-3.30pm every day in spring/summer (kitchen closes 2.30pm), less in winter.

The road has disappeared and the path to the side has a very broken surface, with large stones, gravel and sand. Just about passable with care on a road bike when water levels are low, although some walking may be needed. Better suited to gravel tyres.

Superb former small medieval town, now just a village, but with scenic streets and buildings, a medieval gatehouse, castle and priory (all now ruined), as well as a very nice cafe and pub.

On the Lowe Caravan Park site: no signage to indicate its presence from the road so you need to know it's there. Only open 10am-2pm Thu-Sun.

It has now moved next door. Has a good breakfast, coffee and cake

The Buttercross is in the middle of Swaffham. It is the centre of a weekly market. When the farmer sold their butter, they opened their stands in the shade of the Buttercross so it wouldn't melt away.

Visited this cafe. Nice food and people.

If you are coming from South Acre heading up to High Street, you need to pass through the gate to get to the castle ruins. I missed them on my direct route to the Peddar's Way (northbound).

Fantastic cake and coffee with really friendly service. Castle Acre is the first viable pitstop along the Peddars Way after leaving Thetford/ Knettishall Heath.

This fantastically well preserved motte and bailey castle is free to enter and explore. It was built shortly after the Norman Conquest in the 11th century by the first William de Warenne, a close associate of William the Conqueror.

The tiny hamlet of South Acre was once a thriving village but has now all but disappeared. It is a far cry from its much busier cousin Castle Acre. St George's Church is partly Norman (the nave and font) with additions in the 13th, 14th, 15th & 16th centuries. In the church yard at the front is the remains of a stone medieval cross.

Castle Acre Priory is open to the public through the care of English Heritage. It is well worth paying to go in, but if you aren't able to, there is a sneaky view of the impressive priory ruins from here. It dates back to Norman times and was built by William de Warenne, the 2nd Earl of Surrey, in 1089. It was home to the first Cluniac monks in England and unlike some other English monasteries, the ruins are still intact in many places.

Now self catering accommodation, the lighthouse at Old Hunstanton sits atop the highest point of Hunstanton Cliffs and was used to guide ships into The Wash. Built in 1840 to replace a previous structure from the 17th century. Before the lighthouses, it is thought that a light was displayed in St Edmund's Chapel, the ruins of which are next door.
