5월 19, 2025, Engine House and Engine Pool, Earlswood Lakes
Although the route suggested by Komoot was good there were some problems in the wooded section between the two railway crossings. The path was closed and therefore needed to find a detour.

These man-made Lakes back in the days were a popular spot for swimming, unfortunately, swimming is forbidden now, but it serves great fishing purposes now. There are 3 lakes in total. No cycling is permitted on walking trails around these lakes, but if you have a safe place to leave your bike, you can explore around with pleasure.

Clowes Wood stands as a testament to history, serving as the inaugural reserve owned by Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, a generous gift from an anonymous donor back in 1974. With a woodland history that likely traces back to the last ice age, the area endured a near-complete clearing of trees during the early 1900s. Today, it bears the marks of diverse habitats, including heathland, woodlands, and wet meadows, all bisected by the Birmingham to Stratford railway.

Clowes Wood is a piece of history as it was the first reserve owned by Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, acquired thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor in 1974. Clowes Wood has probably been wooded since the last ice age, though it was almost cleared of trees in the early 1900s. It is cut through by the Birmingham to Stratford railway and habitats found here today include heathland, woodland, and wet meadow. Wildflowers to be seen here include bluebell, lily of the valley, cow-wheat and bilberry. Fifty species of bird breed here, such as jay, chiff chaff, nuthatch and treecreeper, and also woodcock and all three woodpeckers. Badgers live in this woodland and red fox, muntjac and brown hare are all regular visitors to this reserve.

The engine house is Grade II listed and was built to contain the original beam engine that pumped water from the reservoirs up to the higher level of the feeder river. It has been in continual operation since 1823, though in 1936 the beam engine was dismantled and replaced by the electric pumps. You can see the in-fill brickwork where the chimney was removed, marking the arrival of electricity. The building is typical of an engine house; one tall narrow room for the beam engine and lower storey ancillary rooms surrounding it. For this particular engine house the lower storey extension was added post 1846, when the canal was taken over by the Great Western Railway Company due to the decline of canal usage. This is telling in other details such as the workshop bench made out of railway sleepers and the reclaimed platform edging bricks on the stairs. The wooden beams for the upper floors are visible in between the brickwork and you can also see the structural ties that were added after construction, as the building needed more support to cope with the vibration of the machine.

6월 2, 2020, View of Earlswood Lakes and Beaches
Great views across the lake, plenty of location around for you to stop & relax with benches, small extended wooden platforms, beach areas sporadically around them & a nature reserve to the rear with plenty of tracks wide enough to cycle/walk.

Picturesque lakes, not meant to take your bikes on the trails though, worth a look regardless
