Remains of a small ruined castle, mainly an impressive gatehouse and some adjoining curtain wall. In private ownership so not accessible.

Mettingham Castle is a fortified manor house that was created in the 14th Century. Given to monks to create a college, after the dissolution of the monasteries it was sold into private hands. From here, you can see the Gatehouse only, but it's in very good condition thanks to English Heritage. You can't get close to the building, but it's an impressive site nonetheless.

The Grade I-listed Norman Bungay Castle became the seat of the Bigod family, allies of King William during the conquest of 1066. The Bigods were charismatic leaders among the barons and oversaw the construction of the keep in the latter half of the 12th century. Today, Bungay Castle is an impressive ruin, with its two huge gate towers still intact. However, throughout 2023, the castle was closed for restorations.

Unfortunately as the castle is privately owned the best views are from the gates or drone

Bungay Castle is a Grade I listed building. The site was originally a Norman castle built in about 1100 to take advantage of the natural protection provided by a curve in the River Waveney. The remains today of the castle include its keep, gatehouse, curtain wall and the remnants of the castle’s inner bailey wall. Open daily between 10am and 4pm, the castle can be visited via the visitor centre on the road known as Castle Orchard.

Mettingham Castle is a scheduled monument and a grade II listed building. It used to be a fortified manor house and the castle was largely demolished in the 18th century. Today the gatehouse still survives, as well as some of the stone walls and many of the surrounding moats and earthworks. The castle is now a private residence but you can see the gatehouse from the entrance on the road.

Its a private castle so you can't get past the gate, but nice to see some history while exploring.
