This moated castle was built in the 1300s by Sir John de Norwich, a knight and admiral. It’s a crenellated manor house and was considerably expanded once given licence to be fortified. As a result, there are two moats, one within the other.
A huge gatehouse was also built and this is what remains most impressive today, and easily visible from the iron gate by the roadside. It’s passed through many hands after the Norwich family and the buildings inside have been torn down, rebuilt, torn down and rebuilt again.
