The market fountain in Gengenbach, together with the market square, forms the center of the historic old town of Gengenbach in the Kinzig Valley. The fountain itself, with its striking knight figure, was created in 1582 by Max Spranger. The fountain basin dates from the 18th century. The knight is also called "Schwed" in Gengenbach. The city's coat of arms is depicted on his shield, and in his right hand he carries the imperial city privileges. (www.alemannische-seiten.de)

Once you have crossed the Kinzig towards the Kinzigtor, you will see the Gengenbach Rafting and Transport Museum on the right. This commemorates the tradition of rafting on the Kinzig. There are interesting sculptures in front of the museum.

For almost 500 years, the knight on the "Röhrbrunnen" - also called "Schwed" by the people of Gengenbach - has been leaning on his shield with the city's coat of arms and proudly pointing to the imperial city privileges in his right hand. The original (it is in the Haus Löwenberg Museum) was created in 1582 by Max Spranger from Strasbourg and placed on its Renaissance base. The basin of the fountain was replaced in 1796 due to damage.

Gengenbach is a former free imperial city in the Kinzig valley. Historical buildings, fountains, towers and gates, narrow, romantic alleys and the wonderful market square invite visitors. The origins of the city go back to Roman times. The monastery was founded around 725, and the city was founded from there in 1230. Even then, the city was planned in its current appearance, with walls, towers and gates. In 1360, Gengenbach was elevated to the status of an imperial city and was therefore subject only to the emperor.

The Niggelturm (Niggel Tower) was part of the southwestern city fortifications. The lower section of the watchtower was built in the 14th century, and the octagonal upper floors in the 16th century. The tower also served as a prison in the past, but today it houses the Fools' Museum.

With the fountain, the town hall, the surrounding half-timbered houses and the view of the city gates, the town hall square is the center of the city. You can sit comfortably in the numerous cafes and enjoy the medieval atmosphere.
