The South Gate of Angkor Thom is the most famous of the five gates to the imperial capital founded by Jayavarman VII at the end of the 12th century. It lies on the central north-south axis connecting Angkor Wat with the Bayon and is reached via a stone bridge adorned with monumental sculptures.

Angkor Wat, a monument steeped in history, is Cambodia's most important landmark. It's no coincidence that the temple, with its distinctive five towers reminiscent of lotus blossoms, is depicted in many places, such as on the Cambodian riel banknotes and the official national flag. Furthermore, as a cultural asset of Cambodia, Angkor Wat has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. Angkor means "city" and Wat means "temple," literally translating to "city temple." Some sources suggest that the term "Vat" is of Thai origin and means "monastery."

The Imperial Palace is located on Phnom Penh's promenade. The king and his mother still live here today in their own residence, which is not open to visitors but is located on the grounds. The palace has several entrances: one for the king, one for state visits, and one for the general public. The buildings are breathtakingly beautiful. The palace buildings are decorated with countless details and colors.

The Terrace of the Elephants is located in Angkor Thom, north of Siem Reap. The terrace was built in the early 13th century. It consists of three platforms of varying heights, with five staircases leading to it. The terrace is 300 meters long and 14 meters wide. Some of the reliefs are heavily weathered, but some are still clearly visible. Every year in April, a kind of folk festival takes place here. A guided tour is worthwhile.

Bayon is the main temple of Angkor Thom. It has been a World Heritage Site since 1992. The central sanctuary is round, not square. The temple is not surrounded by a wall, but by open colonnades. On the towers, around 200 faces of Lokeshvara, up to 7 meters high, were carved into the stone. Originally, there were 49 towers, of which only 37 partially rebuilt ones remain today. It covers an area of 9 km². Absolutely stunning. Warning: There are a lot of monkeys here.

The temple area covers approximately 60 hectares, although the temple and its surrounding buildings occupy only 1 hectare. Beyond the outer wall were approximately 3,000 villages with approximately 80,000 inhabitants. According to a temple inscription, the site itself was primarily inhabited by monks (12,640). Ta Prohm has become famous through films such as Tomb Raider.
