Great traffic-free route between north Worcester and Droitwich

Worcester and Birmingham Canal connection to the Droitwich Barge Canal - turn off here for the 'Worcester Loop.'

Much quieter than the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, the Droitwich Barge Canal links the aforementioned with the River Severn upstream of Worcester and offers a great way of linking the two settlements in a completely traffic-free way.

Diglis Bottom Lock No 1 is a minor waterways place on the Worcester and Birmingham Canal (Diglis Junction to Diglis Basin) between Diglis Junction (Junction of Worcester and Birmingham Canal with River Severn) (½ furlongs to the west) and Diglis Lock No 2 (½ furlongs to the northeast). It is part of Worcester. The nearest place in the direction of Diglis Junction is Diglis Bottom Swing Bridge No 1; a few yards away. The nearest place in the direction of Diglis Lock No 2 is Diglis Locks Middle Basin; ¼ furlongs away.

Once the Roman settlement of Salinae, an important village at the junction of several roads, today Droitwich Spa and its surroundings are a treat for walkers. Thanks to the massive deposits of salt in the region, the town has always been involved in the salt trade and became very prosperous as a spa town during the 19th century, thanks in part to the efforts of industrialist John Corbett. Two canals pass through the town, the Droitwich Canal and the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, both important trade arteries in its heyday. The Droitwich Canal runs through Vines Park, the start/end point for the Wychavon Way, a medium-distance trail through Worcestershire. The park is a good place to learn more about the brine industry.

From Worcester Bridge, you are afforded wonderful views over the city, the River Severn and the cathedral. The current bridge was built in 1781 but underwent full reconstruction in 1931 to cope with increased traffic. It is believed that a bridge has stood in this location since medieval times.
