The given name John has been widespread since biblical times, so it should come as no surprise that over the two millennia of Christianity, a whole series of blessed and saints bear this name. At the threshold of the Old and New Testaments, we encounter John the Baptist, to whom the vast majority of churches dedicated to John are devoted. But one of the four men who wrote the New Testament Gospels also bears this name. This church in Stoke Row is dedicated to him, Saint John the Evangelist. One of the earliest Christian sites in Britain, Dorchester Abbey stands on the site of a 7th century Saxon cathedral. The Abbey is open 365 days a year, 8am to 6pm (summer) or 8am to dusk (winter) and entry is free. Dorchester Abbey is not only one of the finest monastic buildings in Oxfordshire, with a history going back to AD 635, but is also the parish church of the village of Dorchester. The large church is all that remains of an Augustinian abbey, which was founded in 1140. It is a place of great calm and beauty which has touched the hearts of many people, whether they come to worship, attend concerts or simply to look around. Whether you come as pilgrim or visitor of any faith or none, you are welcomed to the Abbey and to the last remaining monastic building, the Guest House, home of the famous tea room and museum.

There are records which suggest the presence of a bridge on the site in the 14th century but this structure was short-lived and crossing was made by ferry from at least 1379 until a timber bridge was built in 1767. The present stone structure dates from 1827. A toll was payable on both the ferry and the subsequent bridges until 1874 when the County Councils of Berkshire and Oxfordshire joined to buy the bridge from its private trustees and scrapped the charges.
