Oberwölbling, a village in the market town of Wölbling in the St. Pölten-Land district, is located on the southeastern edge of the Dunkelsteinerwald. First mentioned in documents in 1074, the village captivates with its historical sights such as the late Gothic parish church, surrounded by a defensive wall and the pillory from 1589. In addition to cultural highlights, the region offers leisure activities, from the idyllic forest pool to the Fladnitztal cycle route. Oberwölbling is also known for its traditional wine-growing and cozy wine taverns, which invite you to enjoy and linger.

The Altenwörth run-of-river power plant on the Danube was commissioned in 1976 and is one of Austria's largest hydroelectric power plants. Operated by VERBUND AG, it generates approximately 2.1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to supply around 600,000 households. In addition to energy production, the plant features a fish passage to ensure the ecological continuity of the Danube and contributes to flood control through its adjustable weir. Furthermore, a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists spans the power plant, offering views of the Danube and the surrounding landscape.
