This small patch of lowland heath makes a dramatic change to the nearby Waveney Valley and its water meadows. Just south-west of the market town of Diss, rambling around this beautiful open access land is extremely pleasant and the Angles Way long-distance footpath cuts right through it.

Less than half of the round tower of the former church of Thorpe Parva still stands in the middle of a field, with its two parts reaching to the sky, the belfry and the eastern half being completely missing. The west side has a wide split down it. The flint work is reasonably well coursed, mostly whole flints, and there are brick-lined put-log holes (for the horizontal scaffolding poles). The tower of this deserted village only survived by being converted into a dove-cote. This may account for the round holes on the north and south faces. Just south-west of the market town of Diss, rambling around this beautiful open access land is extremely pleasant and the Angles Way long-distance footpath cuts right through it. Keep an eye out for the heath’s resident wildlife, from its green woodpeckers and large rabbit population to the secretive adder which can sometimes be seen sunbathing in a coil. Yellow hammers also forage here and the plantlife, from lichens to sorrel, is just as varied.

Largely demolished 500 years ago, the ruins of St Mary’s Church are slightly eerie in their field position. The ruins that remain are two parts of the dove tower and you can make out the cylindrical shape. Who knows what the church itself looked like, that has long disappeared into history. The church likely dates back to at least 1066 as the village of Thorpe Parva features in the Domesday Book and this is one of its remains.

The Saxon word Disce, meaning lake, is thought to have gradually mutated over the years to become Diss. Its quite believable, as the Mere is at the very heart of the town. Its beautiful fountain runs all day, and the flocks of ducks and neighbouring park make this a perfect place to stop.
