There are many choices to be made here . It's a pleasant spot to drop onto the Shropshire Union Canal Towpath to go to either Chester or Ellesmere Port Basin & the National Waterways Museum. Or continue up the hill to Chester Zoo . In the opposite direction is either Chorlton up the badly resurfaced Chorlton Lane on the left (from the bridge) or straight on (again in the opposite direction to the Zoo) to Crowton & Stoak. Stoak has the Bunbury Arms at its heart, well worth stopping for a bite to eat😋👍

A great place for a peaceful ride. It’s mostly paved, but there is a section of gravel, that could be managed with a road bike.

Watch out door dogs, and swanns on the path.

Good tow path ... gravel and tarmac suitable for either road bike or gravel bike. Quiet in early morning gets busier with dog walkers and runners later. trees and bushes do narrow the route at height of Summer (but still passable)

Improvements have been made to the towpath between Chester and Ellesmere Port, starting in 2020 and due to finish in 2023: 'The project will see the upgrade of three sections of towpath, 4.7km in total, along the canal between Chester and Ellesmere Port, which are part of National Cycle Routes 45 and 70. It can be busy on the canal from Boughton through to Chester University Campus. Take it very easy and watch out for the surface on the older bridges which can contain raised brick ridges installed to give the bargees purchase when manhandling horse-drawn boats through. Once clear of the city there are some quite fast sections - but again take care on bridges where there are often pedestrian access points - slow down. Another thing to look out for is anglers rods/ poles which they might slide back across the tow path unexpectedly. A bell is a really useful accessory!

Not suitable for a road bike. A bjt overgrown at some points making it hard to pass other people

Be aware that parts of this towpath are very narrow with poor riding surface very close to the canal edge. Maintenance of the hedges and vegetation is currently (2018) a bit sketchy so be extra careful when riding this route or you will get a little wet.
