I’m not certain of the history behind this bench, but its unique design makes it an interesting spot to pause and rest as you journey along the Trans Pennine Trail.

This is a super cool footbridge that bridges the River Dearne where the Trans Pennine Way goes past Conisbrough. It is a cracking path and well maintained. There are lovely views down over the river, but much better on a summer day when the sun is out with lush green vegetation.

The Trans Pennine Trail is a super good route linking the North and Irish seas across the Pennines. From coast to coast, starting at Hornsea and finishing at Southport, is 212 miles (341 km) long. If you take in all the side route detours on the way, the distance rises to 343 miles (552 km). It uses rivers and canals and passes through some of the best historic towns and cities in England. This section that by passes Conisbrough is a super section, especially if you take a very short detour to go over Consibrough Viaduct or have a break in the town itself. Otherwise, the river section alongside the Don River is super scenic and a great ride.

Stopped for coffee before and nibbles and drinks after the walk. Warm, friendly, great food and excellent coffee.

An inn that dates back to 1652, where Walter Scott was said to have written one a tract of his novel Ivanhoe. A superb place to stop for hearty food - country pub classics as well as seasonal dishes, which can be enjoyed right alongside the River Don in the summer months.

If all you want here is a coffee, its cheaper to buy one in the Shop than in the upstairs cafe 👍

Thorpe in Balne is a quiet village with a manor house and a moated chapel, which was previously the parish church. The village is in a high flood risk area and residents were evacuated in 2019 during the extensive flooding in the UK that year. Evidence of flood defences can be seen beside the River Don where both high banks and metal fences aim to keep any rising flood water away from Thorpe in Balne and the surrounding area.

The bridge here across the canal is a swing bridge. When the lights are flashing on the road, the bridge is open and a watercraft is travelling through.

We didn't go through the reserve today but took a detour as it was so close
