The Grade I-listed Norman Bungay Castle became the seat of the Bigod family, allies of King William during the conquest of 1066. The Bigods were charismatic leaders among the barons and oversaw the construction of the keep in the latter half of the 12th century. Today, Bungay Castle is an impressive ruin, with its two huge gate towers still intact. However, throughout 2023, the castle was closed for restorations.

Occupying an enviable spot on Rockland Staithe, the New Inn is a traditional country pub. It serves great food and drink, perfect for a refuel after exploring Rockland Broad and the trails along the River Yare. The 38-mile (61 km) Wherryman's Way long-distance trail passes right by the door too.

Bungay Castle is a Grade I listed building. The site was originally a Norman castle built in about 1100 to take advantage of the natural protection provided by a curve in the River Waveney. The remains today of the castle include its keep, gatehouse, curtain wall and the remnants of the castle’s inner bailey wall. Open daily between 10am and 4pm, the castle can be visited via the visitor centre on the road known as Castle Orchard.

St Mary's Church lies by the River Waveney in Burgh St Peter. The most striking feature is its tower, which is said to be based on the Ziggerat temples of Mesopotamia in Iraq.

This three storey building is the remains of a large but short stump of a brick tower-mill built between 1797 and 1826. The tower was only four storeys high, driving two pairs of stones. It was last used in 1908.

The interior of this church looks rather modern, but St Peter has a lot of history on offer. Unusually the plain, low parapet on this tower has twelve sides to it! The round tower has been built with very clear courses of flints in its lower section, (perhaps 11th century), then a tall section of smaller flints, and the upper section with the belfry made of random flints. This top stage was probably rebuilt in the 15th century. Below the south-east nave window appears to be an early flint quoin, which perhaps marks the extent of the first 11th century church here. The whole church is supported by hefty buttresses, mostly made of red brick. The chancel dates from the 14th century, with curvilinear tracery in the east window, though this was replaced in the 19th century. Bungay has some great shops the Earsham St Deli, The Frontroom , The Little Green Wholefoods and Ma Belle Bakery are well worth a visit and all bring something different for your food based needs

Great place to stop and have a beer and a sandwich. Lots of facility’s. Great views of the river Waveney. And also you can stay the night in tents if bike packing.
