4월 12, 2025, The Old Folly Gateway
The gate of an old church. Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out what used to stand there, whether it was a monastery or something else. But I found this portal very impressive.

10월 7, 2024, Rudston Monolith
The Rudston monolith is the tallest prehistoric standing stone in Britain, measuring almost 8 metres high, nearly 2 metres wide, a metre thick and estimated to weigh somewhere in the region of a massive 26 tons. This giant block of grey sandstone or gritstone was errected here either in the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age and is thought to have been quarried more than 10 miles away in the Cayton Bay area south of Scarborough, although the glacial transportation of a large block of stone that was then shaped and utilised by the prehistoric residents of the area cannot be ruled out. The top of the stone has been weathered and eroded into a fluted peak similar to the stones of the Devil's Arrows and a lead cap was first added to try to preserve it in the 18th century. The churchyard of All Saints that it stands in is of course much younger and although the christianisation of the site took place around 1100AD the stone had already stood here for at least 3000 years. The monolith stands close to the Gypsey Race, an occasional stream that flows along the floor of the Great Wold Valley from close to the barrow of Duggleby Howe in the east, past another pair of barrows at Wold Newton and Willie Howe before turning south past the Argham Henge and Cursus down to Rudston itself where it bends sharply and heads eastwards to the sea at Bridlington. The whole of the Gypsey Race landscape was obviously important in prehistoric times and holds a rich selection of sites, most of which have been destroyed or badly damaged by ploughing, including many round barrows, several long barrows, four cursuses and at least one henge. It continued to retain its importance into the historic period - a major Roman villa was discovered to the southwest of Rudston village. In the corner of the churchyard is a much smaller stone presumably brought here from a local barrow and also the remains of a double cist that was removed from a nearby barrow on Rudston Beacon by the antiquarian Canon Greenwell in the late 19th century.

5월 5, 2024, Castle Howard Obelisk
Unmissable and unfortunately not well served by public footpaths or bridleways, however, the main road has sufficiently wide verges to walk safely along. If you are heading north past the Obelisk Ponds, then there is a fantastic track on the east side of the road which is flanked by lime trees forming a wonderful avenue to walk along (see photos).

9월 3, 2023, Castle Howard Obelisk
The Obelisk, raised in 1714-15, carries two sets of inscriptions. The first, in Latin, commemorates the victories of the 1st Duke of Marlborough. The second, on the west side is in English, was composed in 1731 when much of the building and landscaping had been completed. It was written with posterity in mind and is the clearest statement possible of the 3rd Earl's aspirations for his family.

Castle Howard is enormous! It doesn't conjure up Brideshead but is well worth seeing in its own right. The formal gardens, extensive grounds and house are each worth seeing separately.

You really feel as though you a re 'in the Wolds' as you cycle along this road. A high chalky bank to the south west, and rolling hills everywhere else. It is a beautifully quiet and calm place to pedal.

8월 31, 2022, Rudston Monolith
Rudston Monolith is the tallest standing stone in Britain, but receives very few visitors relative to its high standing. The monolith dates from around 2000BCE and is quarried from the Cleveland Hills, west of Whitby. At just shy of 8m high, it would have involved a significant project to shape and transport and install it.

8월 31, 2022, Sledmere House and Gardens
Sledmere House is a Georgian mansion which is open to the public whilst still being inhabited by its current owner, Sr Tatton Sykes (who apparently loves to wear cowboy boots, so keep an eye out for him). The Coach House Cafe and farm shop are before the paypoint for entering the house and gardens so can be enjoyed without having to pay for an admissions ticket. For more information visit their website https://www.sledmerehouse.com/

This is a lovely road that snakes through the dale, good to ride either uphill or down. There is farmland either side and it really gives you a sense of how beautiful the Yorkshire Wolds are.

8월 10, 2022, Kirkham Priory
Kirkham Priory is an Augustinian Abbey, built in the 12th century. If you look carefully at the gothic medieval gatehouse you can see sculptures of St George and the dragon on the left and David and Goliath to the right. The Priory is on the banks of the river Derwent and the area was used as a test centre for WW2 landing vehicles for the D-Day landings. Soldiers even scaled the heights of the cloister walls with scrambling nets to practice moving from large ships to smaller boats. Even Sir Winston Churchill and King George VI came to visit with the troops were stationed here.
