Old disused brick quarry with lots of left over bricks. Cool to see the local history and so well preserved on this lovely coastal walk.

The Rudston monolith is the tallest prehistoric standing stone in Britain, measuring almost 8 metres high, nearly 2 metres wide, a metre thick and estimated to weigh somewhere in the region of a massive 26 tons. This giant block of grey sandstone or gritstone was errected here either in the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age and is thought to have been quarried more than 10 miles away in the Cayton Bay area south of Scarborough, although the glacial transportation of a large block of stone that was then shaped and utilised by the prehistoric residents of the area cannot be ruled out. The top of the stone has been weathered and eroded into a fluted peak similar to the stones of the Devil's Arrows and a lead cap was first added to try to preserve it in the 18th century. The churchyard of All Saints that it stands in is of course much younger and although the christianisation of the site took place around 1100AD the stone had already stood here for at least 3000 years. The monolith stands close to the Gypsey Race, an occasional stream that flows along the floor of the Great Wold Valley from close to the barrow of Duggleby Howe in the east, past another pair of barrows at Wold Newton and Willie Howe before turning south past the Argham Henge and Cursus down to Rudston itself where it bends sharply and heads eastwards to the sea at Bridlington. The whole of the Gypsey Race landscape was obviously important in prehistoric times and holds a rich selection of sites, most of which have been destroyed or badly damaged by ploughing, including many round barrows, several long barrows, four cursuses and at least one henge. It continued to retain its importance into the historic period - a major Roman villa was discovered to the southwest of Rudston village. In the corner of the churchyard is a much smaller stone presumably brought here from a local barrow and also the remains of a double cist that was removed from a nearby barrow on Rudston Beacon by the antiquarian Canon Greenwell in the late 19th century.

Freewheel all the way down here. Watch out for road erosion in patches.

Lovely stop by the side of the river - often swans swimming by & egrets in the trees.

Not too sure which part of the route this is, however a lot of the route is more for walker's than cyclists. It is rutted, the surface is very uneven and to be honest quite dangerous for experienced through to young cyclists.

Great scenery along the beach with amusement arcades, cafes and bars on the other side of the road. It gets extremely busy along here in the summer and on any holiday times, especially if the sun decides to come out too!

A nice ride around the North Bay area of Scarborough. Be warned though, the entire width of the road is cobbled here for the whole length of the bay so good suspension on your bike will make it more pleasant! There is a large pavement but also a lot of pedestrians, especially in the summer so be careful and courteous.

Still not much to see in July 2024, quite overgrown, but that just means it's nice and green. A peaceful spot just off the Cinder Track.

The expansive sandy beach of North Bay is framed by sea defenses, an esplanade and scenic hills and cliffs. It offers a wilder vibe compared to the busier South Bay area.

Marine Drive takes you around the prominent headland of Scarborough, connecting its two beaches - South Bay and North Bay. Keep an eye out for 31 engraved granite storyboards lining the mile-long Marine Drive. Each 'Porthole in Time' offers a glimpse into Scarborough’s diverse history.

Hiker and bicycle friendly hotel with fantastic facilities including bike storage with a bike cleaning room. The food is great, and staff are super friendly. I'd highly recommend staying here.

Chalk streams are pristine waterways brimming with biodiversity and distinctive ecology. They flow through chalk bedrock, resulting in exceptionally clear waters and a rich array of aquatic flora and fauna. They provide habitat for a diverse range of species, including trout, grayling, and freshwater invertebrates. However, chalk streams face mounting threats from pollution, abstraction, and habitat degradation, and we need a concerted conservation effort to safeguard these invaluable natural treasures.

Great flat off road alternative to cover some miles efficiently with some great views over the North Sea

It is not surprising, on having been to the village of Robin Hood's Bay, that some consider it to be the most beautiful village in North Yorkshire. Set in a sheltered bay on the coast, boasting a wonderful (and long) sandy beach, with its streets dropping dramatically from cliffs above to the sea level, it is an absolute gem to visit. Lots of cafés, souvenir and quaint boutique shops in narrow, picturesque streets... need I go on? Do stop here on your cycle for a memorable experience.

Be sure to slow down and stop here, next to Browside Farm, for completely stunning views north from Stoupe Brow, across the green fields to Robin Hood's Bay and the cliffs beyond. A beautiful and enchanting spot!
