The historic North Bar in Beverley

The old railway station building was derelict until 1987 - now a private residence and looks spectacular. Few information boards in the open area in front of the building.

12th Century motte and bailey castle constructed on a raised mound of earth surrounded by a defensive ditch. Before the surrounding marshland was drained in the late medieval period, the castle would have effectively sat on an island. Pedestrian gates were installed at the site in 2023 due to damage caused by off road motorbikes. Unfortunately, they aren't working, there were plenty of tyre tracks in the mud all over the hill in October 2025.

Before the Holderness Drain was constructed in the late 18th century, the landscape was a vast, watery marsh. The drain replaced a more natural watercourse that functioned as a key transport route through the area and was ultimately created to reclaim this land for agriculture by managing flood risk.

Easy walk

Hornsea Mere is Yorkshire's largest freshwater lake. It was used as a base for the Royal Naval Air Service and then, latterly, for the Royal Air Force during the First World War.

The end point (or start point) of the Trans Pennine Trail, right at the beach front of Hornsea. Depending on the weather, it can be a spectacular viewpoint to finish/start or an incredibly bracing one!

Don't forget the cafe in the old Post Office here at Mappleton. Great cakes, lovely people, garden as well as inside space. Composting toilet to boot!

Forming part of the Trans Pennine Trail, this wonderful route that takes you from Kingston upon Hull across beautiful agricultural landscapes to the seaside resort of Hornsea.

Hornsea Mere is the largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire. The mere was used as a base for the Royal Naval Air Service and then latterly, the Royal Air Force during the First World War.

Start and finish of the Trans Pennine Trail and Hornsea Rail Trail - with several cafes and a nice beach nearby.

Hornsea hub(leisure centre)on the seafront, has a good value cafe and seating outside.

Great cycling themed cafe, good coffee and great food. You can even bring your bike inside!

Cycle path on a former railway line. Flat and almost always straight ahead and unpaved, unfortunately a bit boring.

Hornsea beach marks the end (or the start) of the Trans Pennine Trail. It is a long expanse of shingle and sand and much quieter than nearby Bridlington and Scarborough. Its a popular beach for watersports with swimmers, kayakers and sailors often spotted. There are also plenty of cafes nearby should you need a bite to eat or a coffee.

The former railway line has a bad surface and goes straight for many kilometers. There is also nothing scenically offered, rather boring.
