The Outwood Trail follows a section of the former Manchester‑Bury–Rossendale railway, crossing the impressive Grade II-listed Outwood Viaduct. It offers a scenic trail through ancient woodland, heathland and grassland. It's mostly tarmac so suitable for most bikes.

Great place for a pit stop

A quaint little coffee and cake stop at the edge of some great riding and hiking.

Great view of the valley. Very busy with cars coming up the road getting to the Pike. They don’t often have vegan stock, so don’t count on them to refuel halfway. There’s a resident dog that is friendly, loves to come up to dogs on lead, if your dog is reactive on lead keep them away. Resident dog is free roaming.

Here at Prestolee Locks are the remains of six locks, in two flights of three, and in between the two flights was a passing pound where the lock-keeper's cottage was. The canal was closed down in 1961 due to a lack of commercial activity. It is a very interesting area, and I like that they have invested in the construction of the ‘Meccano Bridge’ footbridge here to replace the old horse bridge. It is quite funny too that the location is known locally as Nob End—nothing like a bit of northern humour!

If you enjoy hiking alongside pristine rivers and the sound of babbling brooks, then walking alongside the Bradshaw Brook is the place for you. There is also a weir here across the whole brook as the water comes out of Jumbles Reservoir.

Memorial to a Scottish trader murdered on this spot in the 1800s

On the summit of Winter Hill, close to the transmitter masts and buildings, stands a ten foot tall iron memorial known as Scotsman’s Stump. On it is a small plaque that states: “In memory of George Henderson, Traveller, native of Annan Dumfriesshire who was barbarously murdered on Rivington Moor at noonday November 9th 1838, in the 20th year of his age.”

I would recommend visiting this trig after a period of dry weather like we did. It is known to get very boggy after a period of rain. Great views at the top and enjoyable walk.

Winter Hill Air Disaster Plaque On 27 February 1958, a Silver City Bristol 170 Freighter (G-AICS) travelling from the Isle of Man to Manchester crashed into Winter Hill (also known as Rivington Moor) several hundred yards away from the mast. Thirty-five people died and 7 were injured. The tragic event is commemorated by this simple memorial fixed to the side of the transmitting station. It reads: IN MEMORY OF ALL WHO LOST THEIR LIVES AT THE WINTER HILL AIR DISASTER 27th FEBRUARY 1958. AND WITH GRATEFUL THANKS TO THE PEOPLE OF HORWICH AND BOLTON FOR THEIR MAGNIFICENT SUPPORT. ERECTED BY HIS WORSHIP THE MAYR OF DOUGLAS ISLE OF MAN. F.KENNISH (SURVIVOR) AND THE SURVIVORS, FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF ALL WHO DIED. “SOMEWHERE AROUND THE CORNER ALL IS WELL”

Built on what is thought to be an Anglo-Saxon site, "Two Lads" was constructed over a period of nearly two years by Robin Smith. The two cairns commemorate the tragic death of two young men who, legend has it, perished on the site many hundreds of years ago.The spot, which provides a panoramic view of Bolton, Rivington Pike and the transmitter mast is used by ramblers and runners as a navigation point and is a favourite resting spot for visitors who pass nearby.
