The bridge is also known locally as the "Cowherd's Bridge" after a legend from the time of the Thirty Years' War. According to this story, the "red cowherd" (monument in Kirrlach) saved the town of Kirrlach and its inhabitants from passing soldiers by leading them into the moor (Wagbach lowlands) and drowning with them. They had asked him for the way to Wiesloch and he would have led the soldiers to Kirrlach. In the area around the Philippsburg fortress, many of the surrounding villages were attacked, burned down and wiped out during this time.
